L-Carnitine Treats CFS

by Source: Healthwatch
January 1, 1999

According to a recent study (Neuropsychobiology, 35:16-23), L-carnitine might be an effective treatment for sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome. Carnitine is essential for energy production in our cells, specifically the mitochondria. Disturbance in the mitochondrial function may contribute to or cause the fatigue seen in chronic fatigue syndrome patients. Previous investigations have reportedly decreased carnitine levels in CFIDS. Orally administered L-carnitine is an effective medicine in treating the fatigue seen in a number of chronic neurological diseases.

Amantadine, an anti-viral drug, is one of the most effective medicines for treating multiple sclerosis patients. Now, investigators have compared the use of L-carnitine and amantadine for treating CFIDS. Amantadine was not only poorly tolerated by the CFIDS patients, but produced no significant improvements. L-carnitine, however, was found to be very beneficial with the greatest improvement between four and eight weeks of treatment. Carnitine appears to be a safe, well-tolerated medicine that improves the clinical status of chronic fatigue patients.
