Hello everyone! I am new to this site but not new to HIV. I have been HIV+ since March 1993, so about 16 1/2 years and doing very well as far as health is concerned.

Over the years, I have heard several different scenarios as far as obtaining disability benefits through SSI but have never actually spoke to someone who has been through the process of applying for disability who was HIV+. I don't need disability benefits at this time but I never know when someday I may need to apply.

Is anyone here actually on disability due to HIV related illness or has gone through the process of applying for disability? If so, would you mind sharing your story? I've heard it's very difficult to obtain disability benefits, which I feel is ridiculous, especially if you've put into social security for years and have become ill.

Also, if you could explain what health criteria had to be met to obtain benefits, that would be very helpful as well. Thank you in advance!
