Board and Care?

We have made the heartbreaking decision that my mom cannot live at home. She is being discharged from a skilled nursing facility early next week. She was in the facility for rehab. We were give less than one week to prepare for this. I have been interviewing board and care and assisted living facilities. Our problem is that mom is diabetic and her insulin is on a sliding scale. Apparently board and care or assisted living facilities are not licensed to give insulin injections. What are we supposed to do? I can't bear the thought of her living in a skilled nursing facility. Plus they are so darned expensive.

Not much you can do

unless you are personally willing to go give her the shots then there is no choice but a skilled nursing facility. Even privately hire in home care givers can not legally administer medications.

In home caregiver

Having a nurse come into your home is expensive. We are running into this same situation. With the wandering risk the nicer homes are private pay and work minimally with medicare/medicaid. You are not alone - our next step is a nursing home as well - they all look the same after you see so many.

My advice - keep reaching out - rather than visiting get feedback and set up a list of questions to ask and keep notes. It may be an all out home blitz, however it is worth it when you find the right one.

Hang in there!

Update

We have moved Mom into an absolutely lovely Alzheimer's facility. Yes, it is pricey but so worth the money. She has been there for one month now and seems to be adjusting very well. She has very little aggitation and is usually happy. Sometimes she thinks she is at work and that the care givers are her staff and other times she thinks she is on vacation at her favorite time share. Thank you for the advice that others gave and keeping me on the right track.
