My Mom's Meds

My Mom is currently taking Namenda, Aricept, Paxil and Xanax (.25 2x day). She does pretty well but when the Xanax wears off she becomes very agitated, anxious, can't be redirected, will try to walk out of the ALF and will sometimes get mean. The doctor wants to add seoquel (.25 2x day) to the mix. Does anyone have a loved one on this combination?

The reason I'm so concerned is that about 8 months ago they had my Mom on risperdal - way too big of a dose and she was a zombie. She could no longer respond to a conversation, know what a utensil was, know what the bathroom was, etc. My sister and I were told that it was just the progression of the alzheimers. Mom had to go to the hopsital for her heart (afib) and they took her off of the xanax and riperdal.

The we thought we had seen a miracle. Within a week or so she was an entirely different person. She knew us, told us when she had to go to the bathroom, had conversations with us - we were overjoyed but undone with the doctor and ALF for the bad information they gave us.

We had to start her on the xanax again but now I'm so afraid of what the seroquel will do. I know that her agitated state cannot be any good for her. Is it better for her to be on meds to quiet her down but then whe won't be quite as with it???

Thanks for your help,
Nancy

Just a suggestion

Could they skip the Seroquel and replace her Xanax with Zoloft? Zoloft really helped uncle Roy with his anxiety issues and agitation.
I believe Seroquel and Risperdal are the same type of drugs.
Hugs,
Mariellen

We will ask the doctor

Thanks Mariellen. My sister is going to take my Mom to her doctor next week. The doctor prescribed the seroquel without seeing Mom so we'll talk about all of her medications. My sister said that yesterday she could already see the effects of the seroquel. Nothing makes my week any happier than when I see Mom and get her to smile and she has a coherent thought. I don't want to lose that......we've lost so much already.
