My Son is Always Hungry

My 17 year old son was just diagnosed 3 wks ago with type 1. He is on 6 carb servings a meal and a bedtime snack of 3 servings. He takes long acting insulin in the morning and before bed. Fast acting Breakfast lunch supper and 9pm snack. I am going crazy with him being hungry inbetween. He is on a 2600 calories per day. We are not regulated with our insulin yet. We have changed about every 4 days. He is 6ft 2 and I am worried that he will be over weight. Why is he so hungry??? He is eating double what he did before. I'd appreciate any feed back. Being new to diabetes we are already stressed out!!!!

Depends on what you eat.

Diabetics need a high amount protein, especially at supper time to carry over the evening.

Vegetables are also important, to give that full feeling. I even try to get in 2 small portions at breakfast, otherwise it's hard to get 5 each day. Vegetables offer needed bulk.

It takes a while to change eating habits which were established over a long period of time.

don't know if this will help

anyway i was reading an artical or watching tv can't remember but it said that our minds can't tell the difference between hunger and thirst, they send the same signal.

so if he feels hungry all the time tell him to drink water and see if it goes away.

i was hungry all the time also and drinking water cured the signals being sent. can't hurt to try.

just a thought. wishing you a great day.

there is an answer and its easy

Have a look at cooking with lupin8 you add it to your food and you cannot taste it. It is all natural using lupin kernel flour and other natural grains but the best thing is it stops the food cravings between meals it is really amazing they have a website www.lupin8.com have a look it is the best

I second the idea that it might be thirst

I know when I feel hungry if I drink a glass of water I often find I'm satiated. I'd try that with your son. If the feeling is out of control it may be something different. Try water and if he's still feeling hungry or thirsty all the time bring it up to your doctor.

bernie 53--about lupin 8

I did an online search and could not find a USA source for lupin 8. It all comes from australia althought the website you posted (that originates in Australia) states that lupin 8 can found in well known drugstores. I could not find any will know drugstore online that carries it.

Do you know of a source (other than Australia)?

Also, how long has it been around?

Thanks
