Sugar is through the roof because of prednisone. I'm so scared!
|
I have type 2, but I also have cirrhosis, portal hypertension and GERD. My gastro prescribed 20mg of methylprednisone a day for inflammation, but since then my sugar has shot up over 500. My PCP dropped the prednisone to 8 mg a day and put me on insulin shots in addition to metformin and glyburide. But it has only lowered my sugars to about 386-430. Should I go to the hospital? I took my evening shot and pills about 3 hours ago and haven't had anything but water for 5 hours. Is there anything else I should do? Any help would be so welcome! Hugs, Stacey

I'm hoping you got ahold of your dr. I was on Prednisone for a year for a Rheumatoid Arthritis flare and I had a tough time getting my blood sugar down at first, it really spiked, but I'm Type 1 and have an insulin pump. Your dr will probably have you increase the insulin until you can get your blood sugar back down. It's trial and error at first, but I got a lot of relief from the Prednisone. Test yourself often, taking insulin with only water for food can be dangerous once you hit the point where the insulin is controlling the BS. Good Luck. Deidre

Whoo hoo! Anoher Alaskan! I am in Soldotna, not very far!
|
I really would like to start a support group at the hospital because I think there are more people who not only have diabates, but fibro and I love talking to people and making friends. I could use some friends right now, I'm so lonesome sometimes. I had to be nosy and peek a your log-in. I though Ninilchick sounded familiar I love it here, even though NC is really home. But home is where your heart it and my heart is with the eagles in Homer. Soft hugs, stacey

I looked at your profile too, can't remember why now. Who I haven't met is anyone from Ninilchik, I picked Ninilchicken years ago and now wish I'd picked something easier to type, but am afraid I'll forget my internet name if I change it. It's kind of fun to meet people who recognize Ninilchik. I've met a seller on Ebay who fishes here every summer, on another arthritis board a lady who used to live in Soldotna. The internet really makes it a small world. CPGH probably has a diabetes support group, although probably not one for multiple diseases, but you should call them. I've heard their ads on the radio for monthly meetings. I get my Remicade infusions there. Did you get your high blood sugar figured out? Deidre

Hi Stacey
|
Hi. I hope your doing better now. Have you ever considered trying some energy drinks that safe for diabetics? XS energy drinks are the only ones that are approved by the Mayo clinic for us. They come in 10 different flavors, have 0 carbs, 0 sugars, and taste fantastic. Check them out at sbartz1.qhealthzone.com and let me know what you think. Take care, BHN

The same thing happed to me, too, but I was only on a Medrol Dose Pack temporarily. Prednisone is well known for making your sugar go up. Ugh! Normally, I take Metformin, 1000 mg 2 x day; Actos; and Prandon, 4 mg 30 min. before each meal, as well as Lantus insulin, 70 units, at bedtime, and I have a Novalog Pre-Filled Syringe to use on a sliding scale as needed. You need to call your doc who takes care of your diabetes. You either need to increase some of your meds or go on additional meds. For example, the Prandin really does a great job of reducing your sugar at each meal, it's like it uses up the sugar that you just ate and quickly brings you back to normal after your meal. Ask you doc about this. Any time that your sugar is over 500, you should call your doc if it's daytime, or go to the ER if it's afterhours. Your sugar at 386-430 on a daily basis is DANGEROUS. I would worry myself to death thinking that it is doing damage to my organs every single day that does by with it that high. I don't mean to be overly dramatic, but my father was a diabetic who never watched what he ate until his foot, then leg, needed amputed. Then he went into total renal (kidney) failure and on kidney dialysis then died 18 months after that diagnosis. Good luck getting regulated.
