Hi,newbie on this board

I have a question. I know my glucose is just under being pre-diabetic. I've been changing my diet. I've been having a sweet taste in mouth for a few months now. Could this be from Diabetes? Or something else? I have a call into my Dr,she should be calling me back. Just wondered what you all thought. Thanks, Hugs,Robin

perhaps

It is good that you are changing your diet! When did you find out you were just under pre-diabetic?

This could possibly be a sign though, the sweet taste in your mouth... I know that when I was diagnosed and in the hospital, one of the first things the nurses did was smell my breath. They said it was really fruity. This is a good sign of KDA (ketoacidosis...) which is an extreme case of high blood sugar. Right now, I am guessing you are going to do this, go to the doctor and get a blood test just to make sure! I hope it all goes well : ) Good luck!!

Thanks. I was tested a little over a month ago. I don't eat alot of sugar, never have. I use sweet n low in my coffee now. I know i have to watch other foods as well. Guess I'll be going to the dietician, thought i could just watch it myself. Thanks for responding. I haven't noticed my breath smelling fruity, just the sweet taste in mouth.

foods

Yea, I kinda thought it was mostly sweet foods and stuff before I got diagnosed in October with type 1.... I never really paid attention to it all anyway though. I am sure you may already know this, so sorry if it is repetitive for you, but what you really need to watch after you get diagnosed is the amount of carbs you eat - because, of course, carbs turn into sugar which needs to be metabolized to create energy. With diabetes, this process is hindered because of the decrease in insulin your body produces... I am sure you will hear all of this from your doctor/dietician when you go in, or you may already know all of this anyway! Again, good luck and I hope everything works out. Hopefully you will just have to change your diet a little more and perhaps work on exercise or something rather than move to insulin and injections..!

Newbie

Hi Robin. I hope you get some good news from your doc. It's good that you've been changing your diet. With the diet change have you noticed a difference in energy levels? BHN

Hi BHN

Yes, I have noticed somewhat of a difference in my energy. Not alot yet,but some. I haven't been needing the afternoon nap.
My Dr didn't seemed concerned about the sweet taste in my mouth. So I really don't know what to think about that.
Can you tell me what other signs to be watching for with problems of Diabetes?
Thanks a bunch,Hugs,Robin

signs to watch for

I am not sure what you already know and don't know so I am sorry if I am repeating anything you are already aware of!

Here are a few major things that happened to me before I was diagnosed type 1...

I was always really really tired and exhausted. I was very hungry all the time.. I would eat like 6 or 7 pieces of pizza and be semi-full then about thirty minutes later I would be really really hungry again (but I'm 5'6" and was 120 pounds..) that's another thing, I was losing weight; I lost about 20 pounds without even really noticing (although my friends did). I was also constantly thirsty and would wake up in the morning or in the middle of the night with my mouth completely dry. One more thing was how often I went to the bathroom. I would pee around 15-20 times a day and would wake up in the middle of the night about 3 times or so to use the bathroom too...

Those are signs/symptoms to be watching for diabetes. I am not sure if those were exactly the things you were talking about, but I hope it helped. A couple other things that I did not really have as much were signs of irritability/frustration as well as blurry vision or not being able to see things as well...
