I'm new here

Just want to introduce myself as a Type 2 diabetic.

I never knew a board like this existed.

Anyway, I'm a 60 year old male, married with a son, self-employed CPA, office in home in the New York area.

Don't want to give you my whole life story as an obese individual with related problems - as I'm sure each of you has your own story to tell that's virtually the same.

I expect an exchange of information and education to be the purpose of this board and hope to be able to contribute valuable information.

But I do have one question - as I was googling - what's the distinction between this board and Diabetes Daily vs HealingWell.com forums?

Welcome Big E

Welcome to the board. Unfortunately it has not been very active in quite a while. I have not posted very often myself.
There is a lot of good information if you scroll back through old posts. If you do a search on the user name Wambo you will find some of my favorite posts as he was a particularly knowledgeable individual who did lots of research on diabetes.
There are others too, though.

I am a 60 y o female in the Atlanta, GA area and diagnosed with prediabetes. I was going toward the full diagnosis very quickly and then got my numbers under control with low carb eating. The low carb eating has gotten rid of my cravings and allowed me to lose weight fairly easily. I now look normal and my numbers are normal. However, if I eat say a muffin or cereal for breakfast my numbers shoot way up, and take way too long to go down, so I'm not "cured," of course. I have two siblings with diabetes.

Dr. Carl Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book helped me tremendously. It's too drastic for some people (the low carb eating) but I don't really see any other way for me at present, and now that I've been doing it for months I'm used to it and don't miss the stuff I used to eat much at all. I love the way for the first time since college I am managing to stay at a normal weight. I lost over 50 lbs.

I love not having to take any diabetes medications or insulin, although I realize that may be in my future no matter what I do.

Those other boards are surely more active than this one is right now!

Thanks geltrude

(It's easy to remember that name - I had an aunt Gertrude)

Anyway - thanks for responding. I'm also age 60.

I, like you - prided myself in being a diabetic who didn't take any diabetic medication. Until recently.
I'm also on cozaar and toprol for the heart (as I had a stent 10 years ago), and levoxyl for an underactive thyroid.

I'm now on metformin = glucofage - 2- 500mg tablets per day.

My glucose count used to be around 100, which I felt comfortable with.
Due to the fact that I am a CPA, and the winter time I've got the most hectic schedule, I kind of let go at exercizing regularly during the week (2-3 times/week - 1 hour on treadmill) and let things slip. Came the spring time, I saw my count about 200. I immediately went back to exercizing, restricted my diet a little tighter, got it down to 150. When I saw it wasn't going lower, my family physician gave me metformin. It's now down to 140 range. I won't be happy until I see it down to 100 - cause I want to get off metformin as soon as possible.

So be prepared - that it may be inevitable - you may have to go on to some diabetic medication.

Similar situation

Hi again,

I too take Levoxyl for hypothyroidism, as do my siblings. I guess a lot of us are in the same boat. I exercise a little each day, maybe 1/2 hour of treadmill or jogging trampoline and about 15 minutes of resistance exercises, which help my back too. And I do some stretches. So far I've been able to keep up a routine that I miss when I can't do it so that's a good thing. I feel better than I have in many years. Whatever we have to do for our health we'll do, right? And that includes meds.

I tried one of the websites you mentioned above and liked it. Today I'll try the other. We can never get enough education.
So much has been learned about diabetes in recent years. I hope it keeps up!

Welcome, Big E!!!!!

I haven't been on here for a while, for various reasons, but I'm back now. I also frequent their Fibromyalgia board as well as the Health, Arthritis, and Chit Chat.

I am a type 2 diabetic, almost 59 years old, married, three grown children (one of girls is a physician in family practice, and three grandsons) retired with more than 30 years of service, living in northeastern Kentucky. My father was a CPA, and I was an administrative professional for a large corporation. You can read more about me if you want to check out my profile sometime.

I, too, unfortunately, am obese and love food and sweets. My sugar goes up and down. My last A1C test was 7.6 but the one before it was 5.9. I take three oral meds for the diabetes--Metformin, 1000 mg. 2xday; Actos; and Prandin, 2 tablets 30 min. prior to each meal. I also take Lantus insulin, 79 mg. at bedtime. I also have a Novalog Pre-filled Insulin syringe that I have available to take, on a sliding scale, before meals if I need it.

I'm also on a few heart meds -- Rythmol, Lopressor, and Lanoxin. I have a dual-chamber pacemaker. I also have systemic lupus, fibromyalgia, severe arthritis, severe multiple back issues, obstructive sleep apnea, and much more. I use a motorized wheelchair in my home and rarely go outside.

I hope you like it hear and find a lot of friends as well as a lot of educational information.

There are numerous other boards here at ProHealth. Take a look--you might want to visit them, too!

Take care,
JLH

Edited for an after-thought: Both you and Gertrude mentioned your thyroid problems. I take Synthroid for my thyroid problem. I have so many heath issues that I can't remember all of them at once!!!!!
