Still Have Swine Flu
|
I still have swine flu. I seem to be at the stage of it with some kind of sticky clear mucous choking me and the cough is bad. I tried Mucinex, but it's upsetting my stomach so badly that I don't know if I should stay on it. And it only helps temporarily. I just took pseudophedrine again, which seems to be the only thing that lets me breathe. I might go to the ER for the cough. I've been debating it. I think I'm just scared cause the ones who go seem to be the ones who die. But so far, I can't get rid of it on my own. Total time I've had swine flu full symptoms would be a full week plus today. I really don't want to die from this.

Swine Flu
|
TeaBisqit, Maybe a trip to the ER would be a good idea. They might want to give you a breathing treatment and an inhaler to help you breathe better. I don't have asthma, but sometimes I get what the doc's called weather/chemical induced asthma that's temporary. The last time I had a severe respiratory infection they did those things for me. Maybe an antibiotic for secondary infections also. This really helped me to start feeling better. Do you have any of those walk-in clinics where you are? They're faster and cheaper than hospital ER's. Feel better, and I'm praying for you. GB66

The doc had given me an inhaler, but it seemed to make this worse. I took the pseudofedrine again and that worked like a miracle. It's just that once it wears off, I die again. If it gets bad again, I know I'm going to have to go for help. I'm just trying hard to avoid it. I want it to just go away.

I wish I had some words of wisdom. You sound horrible and this whole HINI is scary. Sending hopes that you get well soon. Sometimes I wonder if my grandma's home remedies worked better: whiskey, lemon, rock candy ( could buy chunks as a kid from the candy store, looked like clear ice and was hard) and some honey. Of course she also thought a mustard plaster that near to burned my skin off was her version of cough help too.

So sorry you are so sick. My great-granddaughter had it and she was one sick little girl . So I can imagine how sick you are. She ran a high temp. for over a week and then it went to her lungs. The doc at this time put her on an antibiotic and she is improving . Usually little ones bounce back fast but it has taken her over 2 weeks and still not herself. So might not hurt to seek some medical help. Keep us posted, Prayes and God bless, gg

HI, Maybe buffered Vit C to bowel tolerance...many say this can knock out all symptoms. Check out the website doctoryourself dot com - under flu. Here's the link - for colds and flu: http://www.doctoryourself.com/colds.html Its helped me alot when I felt really bad - that and magnesium in hot water (the powdered kind -sold here as Calm) for breathing and loosening up tight lungs. God Bless, Elisabeth

Two adults and one child in our house -- all of us had this. The child (13) has just a little coughing left over. The two adults, on the other hand, are both on antibiotics. I have two different inhalers as well. I hear sort of a 'crackling' sound when I breathe. The mucus in my chest is starting to break up, and I continue on guiafenesin for that. Still coughing. I started getting sick the morning of October 24th -- the high fever stuff lasted through Monday night, then only low fever on Tuesday and Wednesday. I saw the doctor then and have been on antibiotics since Wednesday evening.

My son was sick all this week. Have you tried a humidifier. It really helped my son(7). The dr also has him on Mucinex which he cannot stand the strong flavor. He only needed it for two mornings thank goodness. He is back to school at least on Friday but the cough is still sounding bad. Let us know if you saw the dr or ER and how you are doing now. molly Edited to add I also worry that either I will die or my son will die so I hear you on that. Hugs

Envelope Glue

Well, so far, just about all the icky clear envelope glue I was spitting up seems to be gone. The cough is mostly dry again, still alittle mucus in my throat, but not like before. I guess the Mucinex did something or the symptom is clearing on its own. I don't know. I agree with the taste of the Mucinex being disgusting. Just swallowing that big pill makes me want to puke. However, since I swallowed it a few hours ago, I'm not coughing as much. It helps. I'm probably not drinking as much water as I should. But what happens is, the cough gets better, then I drink water, then I barf up a lung again. The pseudophedrine really helps, but I only have three days worth of it left. If I don't go to the ER today, I'll call the doc's office on Monday morning and see what they want to do. I hate having this. It's a total nightmare.

you are doing better! I swear by those horrible tasting blue pills! I break mine in half, put a tiny bit of water in my mouth with one, throw my head back so it forces it to the back of my throat immediately, then push a slippery supplement (calcium or OsteoBiFlex right in behind it with another swallow of water and the second pill pushes the half one down fast! Then do it all over again with the other half. Works for me, and it really, really clears up my thick mucus. I hope you do call the dr. tomorrow, just to be on the safe side, especially if the inhaler makes it worse. Pneumonia can build up slowly, so don't wait, ok? Hoping for the best for you, skeptik2

Going to the Doc
|
I have a doc appointment for this afternoon. The cough is not going away. And it feels like it's in my left lung. I'm still getting some mucus in my throat. And the stuff I'm taking wears off in about five or six hours even though it's the twelve hour pills. So I start coughing like crazy and I can't take the stuff again for alot of hours. It's really awful. I've been coughing for the last few hours. It is Swine Flu. But most of the symptoms went away. I'm just left with viral bronchitis and some stomach upset. The stomach problems could be from the Mucinex, though. And I'm fatigued, but who wouldn't be if you can't get much sleep with the coughing. I try to sleep when the pills work. Also, the NMH/POTS has been bad again. I read that Swine Flu screws with your Vasopressin levels because the body is trying to save you from pneumonia. So it's keeping the water out and the pressure low. But it sux cause I'm lightheaded again. I want this gone :(

Went to the Doc's
|
He gave me some weird cough pill and he's sending me for a chest xray tomorrow. Everyone that was in there was in there for the exact same thing as me! Swine Flu Cough. He said some people have it for three weeks and can't get rid of it. And he was not reassuring that I'm not gonna die from it. And he said he really doesn't have anything better to give me than the pseudo and the Mucinex I've been doing. While I was in there, they accidentally had my chart in with another patient and they entered some junk into my file, but they assured me that they caught it and were getting rid of it. I hope so. That was very upsetting. They were busy, but there's no excuse for mixing up the charts like that. So anyway, tomorrow is chest xray day. And I am so exhausted right now. I actually did do the laundry this morning. And I coughed the whole time. Then I got some sleep before going to the doc. I've overdone it and I hope I can just make to the hospital for the xray tomorrow.

Hi Tea
|
My son who has asthma is down with something, he had the regular flu shot so it probably is H1N1,and I am getting sick as well. I called his pedi office this morning and they already had 100 calls because of flu and viruses, and this was before 10AM Here are some suggestions that might work for you. the psudophendine ( sry spelling) is good for drying up the sinus, which make me wonder if you may have a sinus infection, since you get worse after it wears off. Do you have some saline nasal spray? That will help with your sinuses. Also, having alot of mucus can cause cause some of it to end up in ur stomach, or cause reflux, which may contribute to upset stomach. Drinking alot of fluids is one of the most important things you can do. Rest is another important key to recovery, especially with for us. I know when I am sick, it takes me longer to bounce back than the average person. Another thought about your cough, did your doctor prescribe anything for it, if not maybe you could ask him if Delsym would be okay for you? My son's pedi doctor prescribed delsym for my son when he would have bad bouts of coughing, it really did help him, its once every 12 hours I believe, at one time it was by prescription only but now is over the counter. Hope your x-ray comes back clear for you.

X Rays
|
The Xrays were clear of pneumonia. But of course, they can't see this swine flu virus in there. And it is in there. I'm still getting scary coughing attacks were it's like I can't breathe and cough every second. And there is still some mucus coming up. The doc is giving me a steroid asthma inhaler to try. I'm picking it up tomorrow. He also gave me these pills that are supposed to stop you from coughing. So I'll try that tomorrow, too. I don't think I'm fully over the swine flu at all. I had the chills again a few times today and the headache and even though the fever is down, my head feels feverish. Keep getting boughts of flu fatigue, too. I just don't feel good at all. I'd say, I still have it. I can't even sleep in tomorrow. I have to do something in the morning and then I have to pickup the inhaler. But after that, I should be able to stay in awhile. Flues, which are rare for me, do last long on me when I get them. The one I had in 96, that one lasted four months. I was that sick from it. I'm hoping this thing won't last nearly as long. I think it's a good sign that alot of the initial symptoms are gone. I was much worse last week. But I'm not okay. I have the chills right now as I write this. It's still here.

Swine Flu
|
Hi. I just read your post. I hope you're feeling better. I've been sick with Swine flu for about 3 weeks. It didn't get into my lungs, but has caused me to feel weak and flare-up with fibromyalgia. I've started having vomiting episodes within the last 2 days. Be patient with your body and give it time to recover. This flu can make you feel very sick even after it has left your body. I've been out of work for 13 days, and I don't work on weekends, so that would be additional time. I hope you feel better soon.

swine flu echinacea and goldenseal

dearest tea i have always used echinacea for colds and flu its been in the lancet medical journal re flu virus cold virus. dr myhill also recommends it on her site for colds and flu for a nasty chest cough my dr offers me antibiotics but i always refuse and take echinacea and godenseal root. echinacea helps the immune system and i take it anyway for my ME i.ve given it to lots of my friends with colds and flu and they all swear by it now. golden seal works on the chest so i take that when i have chesty coughs. it works a treat for me. check it out if you have the energy for yourself on google its very interesting let me know how you get on and what you decide to do make sure you drink lots of fluids sip something with vit c or tea anything you can handle i don.t know if i had swine flu but i did have a bug that i couldn.t breath only 50 on the breath scale nearly not breathing dr said i shold have calld ambulance and could not stop coughing was exhausted but echinacea and golden seal got rid of it i know its hard but try not to stress it uses up energy. lots of love

I wouldn't live without echineaca handy. First sign of being "off" I start 2 caps every 2-3 hrs for as long as it takes. Zaps whatever is brewing pretty quick. Works all the time for me. Dosing is critical. A friend at my women's club said her "conventional md" told her to start taking Astragalus since she has "congestion" in her chest. Family history of this condition. I hope you'll be better soon. Fluids and rest and and....jam

Echinacea and Goldenseal
|
Oddly, neither Echinacea or Goldenseal ever worked on me. I always relied on Shitake and Garlic anytime I got sick. But I seem to have developed some weird intolerance to Garlic lately. I've ended up puking if I take garlic. I have no idea why. I still have the cough. I thought it was getting better today, but then it started up on me again. I picked up the inhaler from the doc. I was feeling better, but then I had to walk over to the office across street and that just did me in. My key card for the building wasn't working right. At least I thought so, then I got over there and they said the lock's broke. So it wasn't me. And I wasted the trip and aggravated the cough. But I got the chills again, so I'm guessing I still have the flu, it's not fully gone yet.

Whenever I get a flu with alot of congestion I get a face towel, get it wet with really hot water, wring it and put it over my face and breath through it until its cooled off. Then I get it hot again. I do it over and over again, breathing through the hot , moist air. It will loosen up the phlegm and help you cough it up. Take lots of steamy showers and baths. |
I'm still coughing like crazy today. It's in my lungs and it won't get out. My doctor is clueless as to what else to try. He has tons of patients with it. Everyone has this cough. He said he even sent one over to a lung specialist. It's scary. I've been getting coughing attacks so bad that I almost puke from it. It's like my left lung is coated with mucus that won't come out. And the Mucinex just isn't doing it. I get temporary relief from a combo of the Pseudofedrine and Mucinex with cough suppresant, but it's only for a few hours. Then it's right back. It's horrible.

Drink a LOT of water

Water is really important to thin the mucus so you can get it out of your lungs. I've read that drinking a lot of water can help asthmatics - if the mucus is too thick, it stays put and gets infected. Sorry you're having such a rough time! My sister has had something similar, she's over the fever now but now has the cough and congestion. They don't know for sure if it's swine flu if they don't test for it - but it could still be a nasty flu bug of another type. Take care - Mary

I don't think I'm over it at all. I had the chills again today. And I was cold and I'm still coughing and still have the mucus in my throat now. I was also dizzy. I'm just not okay. I think it's going to take a long time. I hate the coughing. And every time I think it's getting better, it comes right back. I'm surprised no one posted about the cat that got infected with swine flu. That one freaked me out. If I gave this to my cat, I'd want to die. They confirmed that cats can get swine flu. I don't know about dogs, but they said cats. So far, my cat seems okay.

I have been out of the loop for a few days, fighting a bit of my own battle, but it sounds so minuscule compared to what you are suffering. Regardless of which conspiracy gave you the flu my heart just aches for you. Do you remember ever watching "Anne of Green Gables"? Do you remember when her friends little sister had Whooping Cough? She used Ipecac to help her throw up the phlegm and then put that nasty hot mustard plaster on her chest over and over again, it saved her life. That was the old timey remedy they were talking about above. It may sound old school but you've tried everything else so why not give it a shot? I know throwing up from your toes is awful but what more can you do. I so hope this abates soon. Along with all the other remedies your getting someone once told me that vitamin C and Zinc are the two that will help build you immune system faster than anything, especially the zinc. Hang in there Tea, this too will pass, not nearly soon enough, but it will pass, Nah.stacey

Groceries and Hydration
|
I can believe it about the dehydration. Particularly with our illness. We already have less blood volume than normal people. And what I find is, I can drink a monster sized 32 ounce bottle of water and not even have to go to the bathroom from it. Like I don't know where all that water disappears to. I've had that even before getting the flu. It's weird. As far as groceries go, this week was signups for this wonderful program in my building. From October thru April, they give us a full bag of groceries for free. It's a charity organization that gets some kind of funding, but they only get the funding for half the year. I signed up and already got a free bag. They deliver it right to the building's lobby every Wed. So all I have to do is make it down in the elevator on Wed mornings. They gave us fresh eggs and one caesar salad kit with fresh lettuce in it. The rest was like alot of dry and canned goods, but I was so happy about the eggs and salad. Then mid month, I'm signed up for a can program where they give us juice and beef stew and a few veggie cans, fruit salad sometimes. Sometimes they give pasta, too. I'll be okay with food till April, and then I'll find out where everyone goes for those months. I think it's the food pantry, but I have to do the sign up for that and I haven't yet because of being sick and it's hard to park over there. I might be able to get my friend to take me for the signup in the spring. There are programs out there to help us like this, it's just finding them. I had another massive coughing attack, and again with the dry heaves. It's just horrible. I took the Mucinex again and hopefully I'll be able to sleep. I just hate it. I do think it is getting better in terms of that I get several hours where I'm not that bad with coughing. But then it comes back. I think it will take alot of time. My T cell count is probably low from our illness, so it's going to take longer on me than a healthy person.

It has officially progressed
|
No more dry heaves, I actually ended up puking all over the bathroom floor from the coughing. I had to clean it all up. It was awful. And this virus is still in my left lung. I haven't tried the stronger stuff the doc gave me yet. I'm kind of reluctant to try the steroid inhaler because they said you can get a yeast infection from it and it does alot of other bad things. So I've been holding off on it as a very last resort. And the pills he gave me are kind of scary, too. They numb out stuff in your chest so you don't cough. I'm just afraid of that stuff. So here I am literally barfing up a lung. And it won't go away. And my head hurts every time I cough. It's really one of the worst things I've had in many years. I have a doc appointment with my regular doc on Thurs. If it's not better by then, we'll see what she wants to do. I don't even know what they can do at this point. it's viral. And I don't know if Tamiflu would even work at this stage of it.

TeaBisquit Try inhaling steam - boiled water in a container - please make sure it is safe by keeping it one third full - a towel over your head, and breathe in the steam as much as you can - and do this every hour if you can, it should help to stop bacterial infection developing. Sometimes people add a few drops of eucalyptus/camphor oil but not sure about this in your condition.

I had this flu in March. I used a Nebulizer with the Sodium Chloride Inhalation Solution (Saline solution) in it about five times a day for the breathing and coughing. It really helped me to breathe, and got the mucus out of my lungs, I was choaking and pukeing too. You need to cough it up and spit it out (gross I know), but you do not want to stop yourself from getting the mucus out, and you do not want to swallow it either. It will cause stomach problems if you do not spit it out. I also took the 'old fashion' lemon and honey. I mixed a half cup of honey with a half cup of strained fresh lemon juice. Be sure to strain the lemon so the pulp does not choke you. You can take all you want of this and use the Nebulizer with the Saline solution as often as you need it, neither one can hurt you that I know of, but you can ask the pharmacist anyway. You can also use a warm water vaporizer with a pinch of salt in it. That also will help you breathe. That cough stayed with me for almost a month after the flu was gone. Its horrible I know.
Also, like someone else told you, be sure to drink a lot of fluids. I drank water, Welchs grape juice, apple juice, cramberry juice, and also Ensure as I was not eating too good. I stayed away from citrus juices except for the lemon. I also gargled with Listerine (the green one) and swished it around my mouth too. Its great for killing germs.
I kept a heating pad on my back, I think it helps losen the mucus in the lungs, just my own idea there :).
No, I did not go to the doctor, they always want to give me drugs and I am allergic to most of them, and I am very thin right now and they prescribe drugs for someone twice my size! Enough to kill a mule. I lost 31lbs because of family problems, and am only 100lbs right now.
I was sick for quite sometime because of that darn flu, and like I said that cough hangs on for quite sometime after the flu is over with. Take care of yourself. Will keep you in my prayers. Shalom, Shirl

I sure hope you get to feeling better. My Daddy has got this stuff and they have admitted him to the hospital here where I live. He has coughed until he thinks he cannot cough anymore. It is awful. Nothing will break his fever. He now has been sick for a week with it. He is also on a high dosage of IV antibiotics. At the hospital they are giving him some type of breathing treatment to help his lungs and that horrible congestion. It seems to make the cough worse but it does seem to loosen some of that junk in his lungs. Tea, take very special care of yourself. If you just cannot get rid of it please go and see your doctor until they do something for you. They told Daddy that he should have come a lot earlier and maybe they could have helped him more efficiently when he first started getting these symptoms. Tea, I wanted to let you know that it is so serious and for you to take care and keep going to the doctor if you just cannot seem to get better. Gentle hugs and sending prayers your way, hoping you will have better days, Faith Keep us posted on your progress. :)

Still coughing away. I downed the Mucinex again. A hot shower didn't work. Half the time, it feels like a dry cough and then sometimes I'll feel something in the lung. Mostly, this morning, it's felt dry like asthma. It's horrible. I don't have a humidifier, but I could always boil some salt water and try to steam with that. It's a total nightmare. And to top it off, my bedroom pc has decided it doesn't have a hard drive due to a known firmware bug. I didn't know about the update, so now I will have to spend alot of money and get a tech out here. The nightmare does not end. For whatever the reason, I feel this cough on the left side of my throat and in the left lung. But when I cough, it's the top of the right side of my head that hurts. It's totally weird and awful. And i did get an upset stomach yet again. I just wish this thing would go away.

Hi TeaBisqit, It sounds like you are having a very tough time. If your cough is dry and non productive, consider asking your doctor for a Hycodan cough syrup prescription. I've used this for the past 20 years on my patients with great success. It is a narcotic cough syrup that will give you 6 hours of relief with each dose. Gary

i would strongly recommend you call or see a medical herbalist and ask their advise there are other antivirals that they can prescribe tinctures for you that can help boost your immune system to enable it to strengthen and there fore fight off this dratted swine flu they can also prescribe other herbs that can help with the cough and treat chest infections sometimes echinacea can be produced on mass and it is not as effective so getting some from herbalist may be better than mass produced ones. just a though there. seriously a good medical herbalist can be sent from heaven. i don.t know how i would survive with out mine now mustard and horseradish are good ones to eat to open the airways. and although you have this problem with garlic other members of the onion family such as onions leeks spring onions also have infection fighting properties. i find a good curry my fav is red or green thai with loads of onions and hot as i can take it helps clear my breathing and boosts me up. the lemon grass in it is very uplifting as well. guess its getting you down so added bonus there. its very simple to make and coconut milk has antiviral properties i believe. i gave my friends daughter some of the water from a fresh coconut and her virus was gone by morning. although she was only just starting to come down with it so we caught it early sounds like your body is doing a good job really though just slowly as you say your tcells are weak and you are ill already. the docs are doing the best they can but are only learning as they go along. herbalists work differently in supporting the body as well as having antivirals from nature to use mellissa is a good antiviral you can grow it and pluck leaves to put in tea just infuse for five minutes in a tea pot. its like sweet lemon mint. try some rosemary in the mix as well ginger can be a real reviver as well so i use root ginger sliced in normal tea it gives me energy. the chinese give large amounts to women just after labour to revive them after the strain of birth please do check this out with a medical herbalist if you can afford one or check out a good website. perhaps some one has one they can suggest for you to visit. i think you are stronger than you think and are fighting it as well as your body can or you would be in hospital by now. peace love and goodwill

I noticed you on another very short board here. Responders were wondering about you and how you are doing based on a post from March of this year. Me too. I hope that you are doing better than March and better than the swine flu. I hope that you reached out for the services that might provide help to you. Hopefully, you can drop us a word or two and let us know that you are okay.

I still have it
|
It's still in my left lung and it won't get out. And what's really scary is, I can seem like I'm getting better and not cough for a few hours and then all of a sudden, I start coughing and choking till i puke. It's awful. I spent most of the week spitting up clear phlem. And I even ended up puking in my cat's litter box. I had to grab the nearest thing and that was it. I bought her a new box yesterday. I took nyquil last night and that seems to have calmed it down alot for the moment. I also bought garlic oil capsules. I seem to be able to tolerate those, so I've been taking alot of that in case there is a bacterial infection going on. I have a new bottle of Erythromycin just in case, but I don't want to take it unless absolutely necessary. I just wish this would go away. I don't feel over this flu at all. My head still hurts like crazy when I cough and I had the chills again yesterday. It's awful. I think for those of us who are immune compromised by CFIDS/ME, plus I have Advanced Lyme, this takes a much longer time to go away. I have the nyquil hangover today. And yesterday, they put a notice on all our doors in here that they are going to start inspections soon. I'm not well enough to do much cleaning. I hope they aren't going to bug me much. And there are reasons I have things the way I do. I have to stock up because I can't leave the apartment for very long periods of time. I also keep things out and where I can reach them because I get the NMH and can't keep standing on a stepstool to reach things on top shelves. It's awful to live in a place that dictates how you should live. And I'm stuck here.

Inspection
|
Let them know that you have H1N1 and they just might bypass you on inspections this time. I'm glad to hear you went to the doctor because it hits the lungs really bad. I can't believe they can't find anything to get rid of the coughing. You might want a second opioion from another doctor. Just in case your current one is missing something. Your in my prayers for a speedy recovery. Halo

I wish I had some wise words for you. I'm in a flare myself but nothing like the challenge you have right now. I hope you can just rest as much as possible. And if you have any help or support that you can call on it now. I was reading something from B. Campbell PhD about reminding ourselves that this acute phase will pass but I know it doesn't comfort much when it goes on and on. Hang in there. Patrick

Swine Flu and CFIDS
|
I figured out why I wasn't immune to it. Regular flu only hits the top of the lungs. And somehow, all these years, CFIDS has been protecting that top layer and I haven't gotten colds and flus. Swine Flu gets into the lungs in a completely different way. And it goes far deeper into the lung tissue. There was no protection from it. All I can hope for is that the cough will go away and then maybe having had this thing I'll have some natural immunity against something else in the future. I wish I could get out of any inspections. You can't here. It's a government run place. They will come in like the Borg. There is no escape. My only consolation is that there are people in the building who live far, far worse than I do. So hopefully they won't bug me too much. I don't even think I can clean today at all. I overdid it yesterday and now I'm really sick and can't move. And still coughing and choking away, too.

Movin on Up
|
Well, I'm movin on up. Tonight I puked in an actual garbage can instead of the cat's litter box. I am so sick of this. The mucus is alot better since I've been taking the garlic oil. Like I'm not spitting up even half of what I was. But it's still in the left lung and I'm still getting coughing attacks. I had taken nyquil to try to help me sleep, but I ended up barfing up most of it and since I don't know how much of it stayed in me, I can't go take another dose this early. I guess I'm not suffering enough for someone. This really sux :(

Hey Tea
|
Wow, this stuff has really got a grip on you. I feel so bad you're having to go through this. It's been over 3 weeks hasn't it ? Since the mucus is alot better, maybe that's a good sign beginning to clear up. My gosh girl, i feel for you having to puke so much. Your stomach and ribs have got to be so sore from so much throwing up. Are you scheduled for another follow up doc appointment ? It really does sound like this is just going to be a time consuming flu that just doesn't want to stop. I never could take the nyquil, it would make my heart race and sick to my stomach. Hopefully you'll be able to keep the nyquil down so you can get some good rest. Please stay posting with this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Be Well Butterflydream

Yeah it's been weeks
|
Too many weeks. I had the actual swine flu the last week of Oct. That lasted a week. The cough, about three weeks already. I am so sick of having it. Alot of people told me they had the cough a full month after the flu and some people have even had it for six weeks. I guess it's just waiting for it to go. It's horrible.
