Treatment-Resistant Woman with Fibromyalgia Experiences Marked Improvement with Dextroamphetamine

Editor's comment: Dextroamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulate. “Uppers” is a colloquial term often used to describe this class of drugs. It is labeled as having high abuse potential and dependency. Dextroamphetamine has been FDA approved for the treatment of ADHD, narcolepsy and obesity. Although this patient experienced significant improvement, it's important to keep in mind that this is a case study of just one patient so we can't draw conclusions for other FM patients without more extensive studies.

Marked improvement of pain from long-term fibromyalgia with dextroamphetamine sulfate in a woman who failed to improve with conventional pharmacologic treatment.

By J.H. Check and R. Cohen

Abstract:

PURPOSE: To determine if treatment with the sympathomimetic amine dextroamphetamine sulfate, which has been so effective in treating a variety of pain syndromes, including severe pelvic pain and interstitial cystitis in women with the sympathetic neural hyperalgesia edema syndrome would also mitigate pain from fibromyalgia which was resistant to multiple therapies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dextroamphetamine sulfate extended release capsules once daily was gradually increased to 25 mg per day in a woman with treatment resistant fibromyalgia of 20 years duration.

RESULTS: Within a short time, the woman experienced dramatic relief of pain. Furthermore, her edema improved resulting in a 27 pound weight loss and her chronic fatigue improved.

CONCLUSIONS: Fibromyalgia can be effectively treated with an innocuous dose of dextroamphetamine sulfate.

In my experience most cases of fibromyalgia ARE treatment-resistant. However it is interesting that we are seeing another case of stimulant responsive FM.

Stimulans fibromyalgia sxs

Stimulant medication has significantly improved my fibro sxs. ADD (inattentive type) was diagnosed after my fibro dx and has changed my life in many positive ways. I am sure I have always had ADD. My hope is for more research to address the strong association between attention deficit disorders and fibromyalgia. My experience of talking with many fibro patients in the past 9 years as a Disease Mgt registered nurse has been apparent to me that many patients likely would also fit in the spectrum of ADD or ADHD. I was in my 50's when I was diagnosed. The work that Nadeau and Quinn have done for girls and women with attention deficit problems is huge. Their chapter on Fibromyalgia in "Understanding Women with AD/HD" gave me the information I needed to successfully live and work well with fibromyalgia and ADD. I am so anxious to see the medical community embrace this association and offer the appropriate treatment and help for all those who need it.Thank you so much for your article.

Vyvanse for Fibromyalgia

Finally! a site that acknowledges the positive effects of dextroamphetamine on Fibromyalgia. I have been searching for months. I had been disabled by symptoms of FM, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ADD (brain fog), Irritable bowel, bipolar, myoclonis, wakefulness during night, etc. All seem to be coming from some sort of an Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction. I was literally bedridden six months ago. I couldn't read or write any more and was pretty much out of ideas as to how to cope without going on some crazy strong pain killers. Thankfully I didn't. Instead, I asked to try Vyvanse to help with the CFS and pain. I couldn't believe it when all my symptoms were immediately improved and continued to improve in past months. Even my eyesight has improved. Anyone else that has had this much improvement, could you please reply? I have been searching endlessly on the internet for anyone else that has had the same miraculous results as myself. Thank you.
