SURVEY RESULTS: CoQ10
Note: This survey is still open. Your input is important! If you would like to take the survey, please go here.

Last month ProHealth conducted a survey on CoQ10 (ubiquinone). CoQ10 and its more active form, ubiquinol, are among the most commonly recommended supplements for patients with ME/CFS and/or fibromyalgia. CoQ10 has also been used for cardiac conditions, mitochondrial disease, diabetes, gum disease, cancer, neurodegenerative illnesses, and Lyme disease.

There were 141 respondents. The majority had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (76%) or ME/CFS (45%) and had been ill for more than a decade (62%). Most of these patients identified themselves as falling into the moderately severe to moderate range (3-7).

The form of CoQ10 taken by respondents was evenly divided, with half taking regular CoQ10 (ubiquinone) and half taking ubiquinol. The most common dosage was between 100 and 200 mg a day. However, 20% reported taking up to 300 mg/day, with a few reporting doses as high as 600 mg a day. Most of the respondents (40%) had taken either CoQ10 or ubiquinol for more than three years.

Respondents reported a substantial amount of success for both CoQ10 and ubiquinol. The highest improvements were reported in fatigue (60%), stamina (55%), weakness (46%) and cognitive function (40%).  One patient remarked:

There are two supplements that if I don't take, I rapidly slide downhill. They are CoQ10 as ubiquinol, and NADH. If I don't take these supplements I can be bedridden for days. High doses of both always gets me out of a relapse. The use of the CoQ10 for twenty years has been great for my heart. My heart is clean-- no calcifications, etc.

Over 90% of the respondents reported no side effects at all. Only five people reported that CoQ10 or ubiquinol had made their symptoms worse, primarily in the area of insomnia.

Overall, respondents rated their experience with both CoQ10  and ubiquinol as "excellent." About one-third of the respondents demonstrated considerable faith in the supplement, regardless of outcome, by stating that even though they weren’t sure if it was helping, they would continue to take it anyway.

You can view the results of the survey here.
