The association between pain and sleep in fibromyalgia.

Editor's Note:  Sometimes it's affirming to see continuing research that supports what we, as patients, know.  Pain and sleep disorders are common in fibromyalgia.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo clarify the association between pain and sleep in fibromyalgia.

Methods: Electronic databases, including PsycINFO, the Cochrane database for systematic reviews, PubMed, EMBASE, and Ovid were searched to identify eligible articles. Databases independently screened and the quality of evidence using a reliable and valid quality assessment tool was assessed.

Results: In total, 16 quantitative studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. According to the results, increased pain in fibromyalgia was associated with reduced sleep quality, efficiency, and duration and increased sleep disturbance and onset latency and total wake time. Remarkably, depressive symptoms were also related to both pain and sleep in patients with fibromyalgia.

Conclusion: Management strategies should be developed to decrease pain while increasing sleep quality in patients with fibromyalgia. Future studies should also consider mood disorders and emotional dysfunction, as comorbid conditions could occur with both pain and sleep disorder in fibromyalgia.

Insomnia and FM

I've heard/read that if caught early enough sleep disorders can be stopped and they won't turn into a cycle that may become FM? Who knows. But if you have FM and kids who don't sleep or snore loudly, it's certainly worth their future health to have a sleep study. FM symptoms have been recreated in people who have been sleep deprived. How long have you had insomnia or restless sleep? Even just weird sleep, sleep walking or really hard sleep? Aka, weird sleep?! If you've recently been diagnosed, that's the first thing you should do, get a sleep study! They should make a list; what now... sleep study, bit D levels Magnesium Malate supplement, B12 etc etc etc...
Make sure you don't have something else. And I don't mean Rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. I mean Addison's or hypocortisol, thyroid disorders. Etc. all of these things are going hand in hand with FM and can make pain worse. They snowball! Don't give up when u get a diagnosis. It's the beginning, not the end....

This is as if I were reading about my husband's illnesses, who has told he has ME/CFS. Is there a correlation between Fybro and ME/CFS? The pains in his joints and bones from head to toe indicate fybro but I am totally confused with what I should be looking up online to help him if I can.
