Video on the Latest Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research, Presented by Dr. Suzanne Vernon, PhD

For a fascinating plain-language guided tour of the most important things researchers have discovered so far about chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), link to this free video briefing by CFIDS Association Scientific Director Suzanne Vernon, PhD ("The Science of CFS: Past, Present, and Future).

Initially presented as a limited-participation live webinar, this recorded slide presentation offers an opportunity for all patients, family members, and friends to learn about ME/CFS. It cuts through the scientific jargon so typical of the articles researchers write for other researchers, and though it is long at 120 minutes, can be viewed at one’s own pace.

Structured Around Ten Important Discoveries

Assisted by CFSA President & CEO Kim McCleary, Dr. Vernon steps through “what is now known about the biologic abnormalities present in most cases of CFS” – taking each body system, one-by-one. It’s all structured around Dr. Anthony Komaroff’s concise summary, “Ten Discoveries about the Biology of CFS,” and feeds into a conceptual diagram depicting how these abnormalities appear to be interrelated.

A Framework for Taking Research to the Next Level

Overall, “We’ve accumulated a lot of information about the biology of CFS,” said Dr. Vernon. And as leader of the CFIDS Association’s Campaign to Accelerate CFS Research, she ends her presentation by explaining the next steps. For example:

• One step will be to invest the Association’s contributed research dollars for optimum results – identifying the most promising, cutting edge new projects for funding. (Watch for an announcement before month’s end of the winning studies for 2009, selected by Dr. Vernon from a large number of interesting proposals.)

• Another part of Dr. Vernon's plan is to continue building collaborative research networks, nationally and internationally, to facilitate data & information sharing and “harness the knowledge in new ways.”
