Wonder drugs versus safe supplements

This article is full of assertions with no data backing them. While some ring true from common sense, the author offers no scientific basis for them. Why calcium lactate vs, calcium citrate for instance? I prefer articles with a basis in scientific fact. Posted by: MarcieRose Sep 4, 2013

Another perspective

It may be great to have all kinds of scientific studies shown in regards to the use of calcium lactate etc, I'm all for that, but what about all of the claims made for patented medication from the drug companies. They post their findings and testings in an effort to convince the doctors, and us, that they have a wonder drug to fix many of our ailments. The problem is that many patients have adverse effects or the medications don't do what they report to do. It's a lot cheaper, and safer, to try some of the supplements before trying the FDA approved drugs. There are always times when the body doesn't have the time to try out a simpler method, such as major illnesses. We all need to use common sense.

But for those of us who have chronic illnesses, such as those commonly discussed on this site, I can think of no reason not to check them out. We have suffered for many years and the common drugs that are touted for the relief of pain don't always help or cause so many intolerable side effects we can't keep taking them. There are also Drs who treat and study the conditions many of us have, such as ME/CFS/ & Fibromyalgia. I want to applaud those who have worked so hard to try and help those of us who have had so many years of pain and misery. Thank you so much. Posted by: jann Sep 4, 2013

Thank you for writing such a detailed article about all the research that has been done on olive oil and the tree it come from, olea europeaea. Oleuropein is found in all parts of the tree: leaves, olives (fruit), and the oil from the fruit. Since it isn't wise to ingest too much olive oil, oleuropein can be introduced into the body by drinking olive leaf tea, or taking health supplements made from olive leaf. Getting tested before you try an herbal supplement

About 7 years ago I tried olive leaf extract following a friend's recommendation and my CFS-aware doctor's endorsement. The infections started to settle, but I kept experiencing REACTIVE HYPOGLYCAEMIC episodes during the month I took it. I reported this to Doctor. "You are allergic to olives. Stop taking the leaf extract.", she said. "But it was olive leaf, not olives", I responded. I was thinking of a herbal course I had done. Each part of a plant usually has different properties. Doctor doesn't press the point on these things. "This test will show if you are intolerant or not" she said, giving me a form needed to test for food cytotoxins. It was another couple of months before I got the test done. And I WAS identified as allergic/intolerant of olives. Not to mention wheat, dairy, coffee, onions, ginger and mustard. Consider the last three, and olives. They are all probably killers of various microorganisms. I assume what might happen is that the adverse reaction to these foodstuffs occurs after they have killed organisms, which then release endotoxins. There is probably more to it than that, but that may be part of it. 

Whatever; if you develop reactive hypoglycaemia after you introduce a new element into your diet or medications and supplements, you might try stopping that item and see if it resolves.

And yes, I stopped eating all these foods, plus a few more I found induced intolerance reactions (flushing, sudden onset exhaustion etc). Eating is a dull business, but it is better than feeling as though I constantly have the flu. Then there is the drainage and ventilation saga, but that's another story! Hope this helps some of you who wonder why your infections are improving, but your health seems to be getting worse. Posted by: rjr. Aug 17, 2013

We are reading the Epigenetics Revolution.  I have been searching, and searching for an explanation of wheat that could be related to epigenetics. This is it!
