Press Release: WPI,  Friday, Nov 1, 2013

Reno, Nev. – WPI is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kenny De Meirleir as Medical Director. Dr. De Meirleir will play a vital clinical, research, and administrative role by providing medical and research expertise and clinical support to WPI. Dr. De Meirleir will begin seeing patients at the Center for Translational Medicine, located at the institute, in November.

Dr. De Meirleir has extensive experience treating patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and other chronic immune diseases. Much of Dr. De Meirleir’s success with his patients stems from his comprehensive treatment approach. His goal is to reduce the severity of illness through appropriate dietary changes, immune support, and specific drug treatments for chronic infectious pathogens.

“There are multiple steps in my treatment protocol that appear to be working well for a majority of my patients, but we still have much more to learn before we can successfully treat all of those who are affected,” said Dr. De Meirleir. “Translating biological research to patient care is critical to our goal of providing the most effective treatments for all of our patients.”

An avid physician researcher, Dr. De Meirleir has published extensively in various medical journals and co-authored a book on ME/CFS titled, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Biological Approach. Dr. De Meirleir will be a valuable addition to WPI’s translational research program as he continues his research activities already underway with Drs. Lombardi and Khaiboullina of WPI and several other research groups. Dr. De Meirleir will continue his international medical practice while maintaining his medical practice in Reno. In addition to his research and medical activities, Dr. De Meirleir recently retired from Free University of Belgium where he was a professor since 1985.

About Whittemore Peterson Institute (WPI): WPI is the nation’s first comprehensive translational research facility dedicated to the research and treatment of complex chronic diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), fibromyalgia, chronic Lyme disease, and Gulf War illness. The institute is located on the medical campus of the University of Nevada, Reno. To learn more about WPI, visit
