Vitamin D Explains a Lot

I craved and was in the sun and was healthy all those years. I was a major sun worshiper. Then in my early 50's I "came in" from the sun – all the scares, etc. So I took in very little sun except for the running around, in and out of car, etc. and my health declined. Now at 70, I'm supplementing and getting back out in the sun, so to speak. There is a major connection with the arthritis and Vitamin D. I deal with osteoarthritis but am feeling better these days. – J

Some Sinus Advice

I am a registered nurse who has suffered with sinus problems for the past 10 years. I've had the surgery, IV meds, bacterial and fungal infections, etc. Try and avoid the surgery if possible. My first recommendation for any sinus sufferer is that you ask your ENT (if they don't initiate) to take a culture from your nose to identify the bacteria or fungus. This will prevent you from taking antibiotics that do not respond to your particular infection. My ENT [ear, nose and throat specialist] did not do this until I saw an Infectious Diseases Specialist. Now it is routine whenever I have an infection. Overuse of antibiotics is a real problem now with so many antibiotic resistant infections.

The neti pot is great. Use it daily whether you have an infection or not. It is the same concept as washing your hands! At the end of the day, wash your nose out just as you would wash your hands. Your nose filters dust, pollen, bacteria and all foreign matter that you breathe during the day and night. – sinusjane

B-3 for Migraines

I see a drug trial for migraines. My wife suffered migraines since her early teens around 1967. She suffered all those years up to crying and hiding from light because the pain was so bad. In 1996 she started taking B-3 [Niacin]... Since B-3, she has not had one migraine! She used to have cold sores all the time, but not one since taking extra L-Lysine [an essential amino acid], and the list goes on and on...

Doctors can’t say, “Take B-3 because it'll cure your migraines,” because it's not a drug and only drugs cure illness – yeah right! I know better, but are others... learning there are other choices? Obviously that's what you're all about and why they are at your site, but I don't really see a section like that. – James

Note: Thank you very much for sharing your experience with B-3 and L-Lysine – your suggestions could help a lot of others to find similar benefits. And you make excellent points. For example, a study by Johns Hopkins researchers reported in this issue of Wellness HealthWatch found that a majority of medical residents at teaching centers across the U.S. are still ignorant of even the most basic nutritional science.

It’s true our Web sites don’t separate nutritional research and treatment information from information about other types of therapies and ideas. However, if you browse our article and abstract databases, and particularly our general Wellness HealthWatch newsletter archive, we think you’ll find a decided emphasis on nutrition.

As for news about drugs, everybody is different, so healthy lifestyle and nutrition may be enough to help one person’s pain or other symptoms, but not another’s. Until cures are found, many people find they need to supplement basic health support strategies with pain relief and other drugs, and for them we feel an obligation to keep them informed of the possibilities.

Social Security Information

Get the book Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability. It is the best money you will ever spend in fighting for your benefits. You can find it on Amazon, and I'm sure bookstores can order it for you.

Some of the chapters, just for your info:

Applying for Disability Benefits; Getting Benefits During the Application Process; Proving you are disabled; Who decides your claim; How age, education and work experience matter (important chapter); When benefits begin; Reasons you may be denied benefits; Appealing if your claim is denied; Once you are approved; Continuing disability review; Your right to representation. Then multiple chapters on various qualifying disorders.

It has examples of the forms, definitions for terms and so much more. This book helped me tremendously, and also helped my doctor when it came time for him to write a letter on my behalf. My doctor’s 5-page letter won my case. Even the medical expert and judge said it was the best letter they had seen, and how it helped explain my problems.

I am 56, live in Arizona, I filed 10/05 using Allsup. I was denied twice, and won my case before the Administrative Law Judge [recently]. I was awarded back to my first day off of work... I also wrote to my congressman when it was taking so long to get a judge assigned.

Much luck to all of you who are filing. Don't give up hope or the fight! - M J

Laughter IS the Best Medicine

I stumbled upon a fun and interesting website. It has stories and essays that are read out loud by an aspiring voice actor. It’s called The Grafton Voice. It is found at GraftonVoice.com. One story – “The Mysterious Cheese Ship of the Atlantic” - is so funny I laughed out loud when I listened to it. It’s a silly kind of funny. I figure we can all use some laughter in our lives.

There are more serious essays and stories on the website. [Contributions are welcome.] There is even one essay, “Joyous Living,” that is written by someone who has CFIDS. It’s free and easy to use. It also looks like they are trying to get writers to submit their works to be read on the site.

I know this is not a strictly medical issue, but on the other hand they say laughter actually stimulates the immune system. So in some sense, it is a medical issue. Anyway I just thought I’d pass it along. It’s not often something makes me laugh out loud. – 28 years

Regarding Sinus problems
Posted by: vickiw

I had doctors treat me with antibiotics for my sinus "infections" quite a few times, only to find out finally that what I really suffer from is a milk allergy. I don't have lactose intolerance, but it is an allergy to the milk protein. I don't get sneezy or a runny nose, but my sinuses clog up and I get terrible sinus headaches.
