Following are a few headlines & quotes excerpted from recent information-packed Interstitial Cystitis Association e-newsletters.  (See their nonprofit www.IChelp.org site for much more on IC/painful bladder - including many educational resources; finding a doctor, diagnosis, and clinical trials; a Q&A; blogs; overlapping conditions such as IBS, allergies, endometriosis, vulvodynia, pelvic floor problems, prostatitis, panic attacks, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, & TMJ; and much more.)

Omega 3s [fish oil] May Prevent Entometriosis. Could They Also Ease IC?

“The first-ever modifiable risk factor – that is, a risk factor you can do something about – has been found for endometriosis…. [To see the cited report, “A prospective study of omega-3 and endometriosis risk,” click here.]

“…One of the reasons this study is so intriguing for people with IC is that omega 3 supplements came up well in the 2009 ICA Complementary and Alternative Medicine Survey. 58% of you said fish oil or other omega 3 supplements help ease your IC symptoms at least somewhat….”

Allergy Shows Strong Link with Vulvodynia… [and by association, Interstitial Cystitis]

Highlights the study of “Allergic reactions and risk of vulvodynia,” which reports that inflammation-causing histamine generating cells – the cause of ‘allergy’ symptoms – are always found in vulvar tissue of vulvodynia patients, but not normal subjects. Notes that “This is the first study we know of that makes a definite link between allergy and the risk of having an IC-related condition. Women with vulvodynia are at least twice as likely to have had allergies beforehand as women without vulvodynia. In the days when bladder biopsy was more common, pathologists often noticed mast cells in IC patients’ bladder tissue....”

Rate of IC in Vulvodynia Patients May Be Very High
“Some 80% of vulvodynia patients may have interstitial cystitis….” [See cited article, “Prevalence of Interstitial Cystitis in Vulvodynia Patients Detected by Bladder Potassium Sensitivity.”] “In fact, some speculate that vulvar pain may often be referred from the bladder…."
