Alert: Lot of Extra-Strength Tylenol Caplets Recalled

Johnson & Johnson issued a recall notice June 28 on 61,000 bottles of Tylenol Extra Strength caplets (lot ABA619, manufactured back in February 2009). The label says “Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets, 225 count”; UPC code 300450444271.

The problem - a musty, moldy, or mildew-like smell that users have been noting, which has been linked in the past to the chemical 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). TBA, in turn, has been linked to some cases of nausea, stomach upset, vomiting and diarrhea.

What is TBA & where does it come from? TBA is produced when the fungicide/preservative TBP, used to treat wood shipping pallets or fiberboard, reacts with certain strains of fungus. TBA outgases and gets absorbed by products stored on the pallets – e.g., empty plastic bottles headed for pill packaging, foods packaged in plastic, or corks, in the case of tainted wine. (In January 2010, for example, lots of Tylenol, Motrin, Rolaids, and St. Joseph Aspirin were recalled for the same reason, in that case relating to bottles that had been stored on pallets in Puerto Rico.)

What to do? Don’t take any, and if you want a refund or coupon:

Call 888 222-6036

Or email the company. This site - http://www.tylenol.com/page.jhtml?id=tylenol/news/main.inc - gives email addresses for a list of product recalls in 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Finally, if a consumable product smells like mildew, or musty to you, believe your nose.
