Spraying for Moths Hazardous?

Q: I am writing because I'm very concerned about the possible health effect to San Francisco Bay Area residents, especially those like me who may be particularly vulnerable because they have CFIDS or Fibromyalgia, from the proposed aerial spraying of pesticides over the bay area. Starting in August there is a plan to blanket most of the Bay Area, including the entire city of San Francisco, with pesticides dropped by planes. This will go on for years, to fight something called the "light brown apple moth." So how does anyone justify spending $74.5M spraying for the moth, including over urban areas? – molequeen1

A: This particular moth can damage just about every type of tree, fruit, and vegetable. Surveillance for the light brown apple moth (LBAM) has extended nationwide and to Canada. To avoid use of pesticides, they’re using an LBAM-specific pheromone to confuse the moth’s mating – via spraying or hand-applied “twist ties” for localized infestations. A “2008 LBAM Brochure” at the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CAFA) website (http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/phpps/PDEP/lbam/lbam_main.html) states the pheromones are safe, and lists associations that have approved their use. For the cautious and sensitive, you can subscribe for "e-mail updates" on dates/locations of LBAM aerial & other activities at http://phpps.cdfa.ca.gov/notification/signup2.aspx Other states and Canada will offer similar info in case of infestations, and it’s always a good idea to wash or peel fruits and vegetables.

OTCs in Smaller Quantities?

Q: Why can't new meds come out in a smaller number so that one can afford to purchase and try them? I would hate to pay a large amount for 180 pills and then find out they don't work for me. If they worked, then I would definitely buy more, but will not pay for a large amount without knowledge. These are OTC pills for the problems of Fibro, as well as other muscle problems. If it was a prescription, I could request a certain amount. – Mary

A: Without knowing which specific medication you’re referring to, it’s difficult to say. Most over-the-counter medications come in two or three different quantities. Check with the pharmacist to see if smaller quantities are available that they just don’t carry in that particular store. You may be able to find them at another store, or ask if the pharmacist can order them for you. If the medication does not come in smaller quantities, it’s probably because there’s not a big market for small amounts of that particular medication. As with most things, it usually comes down to cost effectiveness and market demand.

When Will Article on B-12 & ME/CFS/FM be Posted?

Q: RE: the B-12 deficiency article in the March 10 newsletter promising a future article on B-12’s role in the biochemistry of ‘unexplained illnesses.” I’m looking forward to seeing the next article in this series on NO-ONOO- and methylation cycle disregulation. I know these are two of the most popular theories right now, but I’m hoping Dr. Myatt’s article can explain them in layman’s terms (as I felt this article did). - Lindsey

A: You can access this article (“The Vitamin B-12 – ME/CFS/FM Connection”) now at http://www.immunesupport.com/library/showarticle.cfm?id=8749.

China, and Source of Supplement Ingredients?

Q: What is the source of your vitamin ingredients such as sublingual Q10? Due to the China toxic issue, some other companies list it but we can’t locate it on your site. – Barbara

A: As for your question about Coenzyme Q-10, our purchasing agent tells us that all CoQ-10 on the market is sourced from four suppliers not in China but in Japan, known as “The Big Four.” In addition to any quality standards they employ, the material imported from them must all be tested when it enters the U.S.; and ProHealth has every product we carry tested routinely by leading independent testing labs in the U.S. ProHealth does carry a small number of products requiring ingredients sourced in China, but again, we subject these to regular independent testing to ensure highest quality, purity, activity, and amounts as listed on the label.

If you have any questions about the source of ingredients in a specific ProHealth product, you may always contact our Customer Service staff ( CustomerLoyalty@prohealth.com or 1-800-366-6056) and they will do their best to find the information you need.
