Immunologic Status Correlates With Severity of Physical Symptoms in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients

by Source: S. Wagnor, M.S., L. Helder, Ph.D., N. Klim
January 1, 1999

Researchers found that cellular immune activation is associated with the severity of CFS-related physical symptoms, cognitive complaints, and perceived impairment. Elevations in T-helper/inducer cells, activated T-cells, activated cytotoxic/suppressor T-cells, and CD4/CD8 ratio are associated with greater disease severity such as tender lymph nodes, concentration and memory difficulties, headache frequency, fatigue, and sleep problems. The study also suggests that a low availability of T-suppressor/cytoxic and regulatory T-cells are associated with greater symptoms such as cognitive difficulties, memory problems, headache frequency, and fatigue severity. The participants in the study, included twenty-seven patients diagnosed with CFS. The researchers administered a self-report questionnaire to each participant testing physical and cognitive impairment. Blood was also drawn from each participant at the time the survey was given.
