American Academy of Pain Management to Hold 16th Annual Clinical Meeting Interdisciplinary Pain Organization Breaks Boundary Between Conventional Western Medicine and Complementary and Alternative Approaches SONORA, Calif., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Pain Management (the Academy), the nation's largest interdisciplinary organization for clinicians who treat people with pain, will hold its 16th annual clinical meeting, Clinicians United to Manage Pain, in San Diego, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, from September 22-25. The meeting will be co-sponsored by the University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and in association with Cleveland Chiropractic College. The clinical meeting will offer sessions, lead by some of the nation's top pain experts, that will focus on: current trends and therapies in the field including both allopathic and complementary and alternative (CAM) approaches to pain conditions; clarify laws and policies related to pain management; and, provide pain practitioners with the information and tools they need to prescribe opioids correctly and within the boundaries of state and federal law. Up to 28 Continuing Education credits will be available for most disciplines. A special California Workers' Compensation track will be offered on Thursday, September 22, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm that will cover topics such as: ways to work within the system; understanding legal issues; and, how to do functional capacity evaluations. "Our clinical meeting is different from all others focusing on pain management," says Kathryn Padgett, PhD, Academy Executive Director. "We educate clinicians from a truly interdisciplinary perspective. Our organization supports an integrative model of healthcare -- one in which allopathic and CAM clinicians work together to find the most effective ways to treat people with pain." In addition, at the Annual Meeting, the Academy will be launching an initiative, called Project Connect, to help members and other pain management clinicians, who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, find work. For more information about the meeting and a schedule of sessions, visit http://www.aapainmanage.org. About the Academy The American Academy of Pain Management is a non-profit organization that serves a broad range of clinicians who treat people with pain. Founded in 1988, the Academy has approximately 6,000 members and is the largest interdisciplinary pain organization in the United States. The Academy believes that effective pain management can be achieved through cooperation, shared knowledge, and the collective wisdom of healthcare professionals from many disciplines.
