24 October 2005 For Immediate Release Contact: Corin Walson (714) 921-0150 cwalson@fmaware.org Costa Mesa, Calif---The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) and a coalition of national experts on Fibromyalgia will release initial findings on the first ever multi-center epidemiological survey on Fibromyalgia during a press briefing on October 25 at 2 p.m. at Costa Mesa's Holiday Inn Hotel. Over 3,000 participants responded to the survey posted through the Internet and through the NFA's website, www.FMaware.org. "The goal of this survey is to collect valuable information that will ultimately help assist health care providers and people with Fibromyalgia (FM) understand the cause and the impact of FM, as well as how to more effectively manage symptoms of FM," said Lynne Matallana, president and founder of the National Fibromyalgia Association which is sponsoring the survey. "Although fibromyalgia is more than twice as prevalent as rheumatoid arthritis (.08% prevalence rate), the general public has little, if any, understanding of this debilitating medical condition," adds C. Jessie Jones, PhD, California State University, Fullerton professor of health science and principal investigator of the survey. "With the help of the NFA and the distinguished team of national experts on this illness, we hope this survey will provide baseline information needed to improve the overall health status of people with FM." Investigators say the survey will provide information that will help determine (1) the prevalence of FM among different age and ethnic groups, both genders, different regions of the country, and other demographic information, (2) underlying factors associated with the onset of FM, (3) medical profile of FM, (4) impact of FM on functional ability, psychosocial aspects of life, general well being, medical costs, employment status, work productivity, and (5) effectiveness of pharmaceuticals, over the counter remedies, and psycho-physiological interventions on the symptoms of FM. SURVEY's PHASE 2 BEGINS OCT. 26, 2005 Phase 2 of the NFA's Epidemiological Survey on Fibromyalgia will be available online starting October 26, 2005. Phase 2 is an extension of the original questionnaire; only those who did not participate in the first phase of the survey will be able to take part. Phase 2 will also be available in both English and Spanish. For more information on the October 25 briefing at the Holiday Inn, contact Corin Walson at 714-921-0150.
