By Christine E. Murray and Thomas L. Murray, Jr. • www.ProHealth.com • September 27, 2006

Journal: Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain, Vol. 14(1) 2006 Authors and Affiliations: Christine E. Murray, Department of Counseling and Educational Development, University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and Thomas L. Murray, Jr., private practitioner, Greensboro DOI: 10.1300/J094v14n01_03 Objectives: The purpose of this study was to attempt to identify demographic risk factors for increased symptom severity among patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome [FMS] Methods: This study involved a cross-sectional Internet-based survey of adults diagnosed with FMS. Results: Analyses of variance revealed that symptom severity was associated with age, employment status, household income level, and level of educational attainment. Conclusions: This study has identified four variables that are predictive of FMS clinical severity. It is proposed that demographic variables be assessed as a component of future management strategies. [ImmunSupport.com note on the study findings: The authors found four main demographic variables that correlated with symptom severity. Average severity scores were somewhat worse for those with 12 years of education or less, vs. 17 years or more; for those with incomes between $29,000 and $59,000, vs. those with incomes of $60,000 or more; for those who are unemployed; and for those ages 37 to 57, versus those ages 58 and older. “A surprisingly absent variable in that list was duration of symptoms, since many patients complain that they are feeling progressively worse with time,” according to the journal’s Editor, I. Jon Russell, MD, PhD.]
