Letters from Our Readers - FM & CFS: To Separate or Not To Separate? 11-22-06

Don’t separate: Two sites will double my time
I just read in your most recent newsletter that you plan to separate CFS and FM in your formats because a reader felt lumping them together trivialized both. I strongly disagree. From what I have read, most of us have both and I can't always tell which of my symptoms come from which disease.

In addition, I have such limited energy. Throw in the pain factor and this further reduces the time that I can spend researching/checking the board. It seems to me separating the two would double the time I'd need to spend on this - and I just don't have any more time to spare. I love your site. In fact it has been a real God-send of support and information. I truly hope you don't change that. – Donna

Separate: Distinguish the differences between FM & CFS
I just read a letter from another reader about how your website doesn't seem to differentiate between CFS and FM. In response you announced that in the future you will be addressing CFS and FM separately, which is a good idea, as some people can be confused about CFS and FM.

Although these are different diseases, I truly believe they originate from the same birth canal, so to speak. Just as all autoimmune diseases, from FM to RA, are different, there MUST be a parallel similarity amongst all. Hopefully with further research, something short of an epiphany will present itself and maybe there could be a common solution to complicated diseases such as these – Anon

Don’t separate: We may miss out on important information
I was first diagnosed with FM, then later CFS. Some think they are the same. We do not know enough yet to be sure. There has to be some relationship for sure. Some only get the FM diagnosis and so do not know they also have CFS. Some doctors do not know enough about these illnesses or do not think they are real illnesses.

Plainly and simply, I appreciate this being an FM and a CFS message board…I feel that those with FM would miss out on info about CFS that might provide helpful answers. I would not appreciate or learn by it being divided. It is easy enough to go through and not read about CFS if you have FM only. At any time an FM person could also get a CFS diagnosis. – Susan

Note: They say you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but we’re doing our best to try to please as many of you as possible. When our web redesign is completed, whether you want FM and CFS to be kept together or prefer separate sites for each, you should find exactly what you’re looking for. The site will remain, as it is now, a repository of information about both FM and CFS. However, two additional portals will be added (one for FM and one for CFS), where those who are interested in only one of the conditions can find information specifically about that condition. As always, we welcome your input and suggestions.

Definetely Separate FM & CFS
Posted by: ctnjm
Nov 22, 2006
As a CFS patient with no pain, I have a hard time finding material specifically for CFS. Because FM is more recognized by the medical profession, probably due to the debilitating pain it causes, classifying them together is just another issue that makes me, as a CFS patient, feel that CFS doesn't get the attention it needs. I can't even compare my lifestyle or condition to the one that FM patients experience. However, I have my own set of symptoms with CFS, ones that FM patients may or may not have. I may not have the muscle pain, but on some days, I am so dizzy I can hardly stand. I have struggled with the crazy mental games that goes with CFS. Although it seems to be agreed that the two conditions are similar, the differences for someone like me are profound. I would like to have specific CFS info and not have to weed through the FM material. Thanks for letting me give my honest opinion!
