Letters From Our Readers - Honorable Mentions 2-21-07

www.ProHealth.com • February 21, 2007

This week we received so many good letters that we decided the following three should receive honorable mention.

You Are Not Alone!

I have had Fibromyalgia for 20 years. Of course nobody knew but me for about the first 10 years. I was fortunate to find a young female doctor who finally did the right test. After years of people telling me I was crazy because they couldn't find anything wrong with me except depression and panic attacks, finding out I had Fibromyalgia was a relief. Some people may say, "What's wrong with this woman?" But after years of self-doubt and extreme pain - not only in my body but also my being - a huge wave of relief swept over me and I cried. I was not alone! This knowledge gave me a reason to believe again. It's been very hard, but to know you are not alone is like a kiss from the creator. The soul begins to sing again and the heart hears it.

I have been married to the same man for 20 years. He went with me for many of the so-called doctor appointments. When they told him it was all in my head, when they couldn't find anything, the compassion dulled. Not much has been said about this for about 10 years. I live day to day the best I can, with self-esteem and dignity. Last week we had a talk and my husband told me that to this day he doesn't believe in Fibro, nor does he think I have it.

It did hurt me at first, but Fibro, if nothing else, has given me thick skin. I know my body better than he or any other doctor. I know where I am. I'll be 55 this year, and through all the years of self-growth and self-care, I'm better off than I was at 35. I understand what I can do, when to say no, and to be kind to myself. It doesn't matter what other people think of you. It's what you think of you.

I think you are fabulous and you are not alone! – Carol

The Importance of Knowledge

It is important for us to understand we have a disability, what it entails, what is known and unknown about it, and that presently it is considered incurable. Maybe more important is to understand that we have within ourselves the ability to rise above much of our disability. We may hurt, but we can learn to be strong. We may be tired, but we can learn to maximize what energy we have. We may find great improvement in how we feel and function.

To this end, ProHealth can help us by printing articles on exactly how we can engage our healing and immune systems. We need articles on what good nutrition is, its importance, and how it can help us get better. We need to have good information on what supplements to take. We need essays on the how and why of mobility and exercise. Above all, we need to know how we can engage our own minds to help heal our bodies. – Pearl

Help Us Find Good Doctors

I love the FM Newsletter. It contains so much information and so many resources. Knowledge is power and knowing more about FM has enabled me to take better care of myself, to educate my friends and family, and to manage my health and my life better.

What I have not been able to do is find a good doctor. After my fantastic endocrinologist left private practice to do research, I have gone from doctor to doctor, finally settling on a GP who could manage my general, routine care. However, he barely acknowledges the existence of Fibromyalgia and provides no assistance in managing it.

I know I can't be the only person struggling with this problem. It would be great if we had a database of physicians and healthcare providers who are knowledgeable and actively treat FM patients. – Dianne

Note: You are right. The number one problem patients cite, by far, is inability to find a healthcare provider near them who is conversant in FM or CFS. The best resource we have is the international Co-Cure ME/CFS & FM Good Doctor List, which you can search by going to http://www.ImmuneSupport.com/community and clicking on the "Doctors" tab.
