Strength Development Made a Difference

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 15 years ago. In that period of time I have been to many doctors, trying to find relief from my pain, lack of sleep and fatigue. Same old story – “pain pills and sleeping pills, nothing is wrong with me and maybe it is psychological.” I chose to try many of the natural treatments in lieu of drugs. Nothing gave me complete relief, so I had to learn to live with it. I also had gained 40 pounds from not being able to have a life.

About 6 months ago, we purchased [equipment designed to encourage muscle development through non-aerobic exercise involving resistance] and started working out 20 minutes, three times a week. I was in a lot of pain for about three weeks but I kept going (thanks to ibuprofen) and a miracle happened. I am no longer in pain and have been sleeping like a baby. I’m no longer on any type of pain pills or drugs. I attribute this directly to [this] type of exercise… that is non-traumatic…. – Beverly

Grateful for Gentle Chiropractic

Just wanted to share with everyone what helped me tremendously with my Fibromyalgia and back and neck pain. A little over a year ago my pain management doctor referred me to a chiropractor because nothing helped my pain. I refused to take all the pain medicine I was being prescribed by my rheumatologist. I thought I would give chiropractic care a try. What did I have to lose? I was in the process of applying for permanent disability.

A year later, I am back to working part time and my quality of life has improved dramatically. I still get the occasional flare-up, but they are less severe and of shorter duration. My chiropractor lets me stop in any time I need to see him and he works on my back and neck with gentle manipulation and electrical stimulation. He has done wonders for me. I don’t know where I would be today if it weren’t for him. – Janice

Play an Active Role With MD To Find Best Solutions

Thank you for updating me on fibro, with patients’ comments and the latest treatments…At my last visit in January, my rheumatologist decided to add a prescription for depression. She prescribed one of the newer drugs called CymbaltaTM and gave me a sample to try. I went on a roller coaster ride and felt like I did when I had food poisoning. I did not take any more. I saw my regular physician who said it was probably too potent and put me on "an oldie, but a goodie," as he described it. It was a low dose of Mirtazapine.TM

I was told to give it a chance for six weeks. At the end of six weeks, I was not a happy patient. [I had] irregular bowel movements and indigestion, was achy all over, and did not feel well at all. I asked him why my rheumatologist thought I should have something for depression…My doctor explained it wasn't exactly for depression that she was prescribing a medication, but thought it would help me over some rough spots I seem to have at particular times of the year or months (like changes of weather). I told her I did not wish to be on it anymore.

Then I decided to increase the amount of SAM-e [a dietary supplement I was taking] from once a day to three times a day. It has helped enormously. I feel that we should always question any medication that our physician wants to give us because, with fibro, we tend to react differently to medications than most people…I am not telling fibro patients not to take an antidepressant if they need one and are under a doctor’s care, but please monitor your reaction on a daily basis and question your doctor if you feel you might be better without it. – Elfvoda

Note: SAM-e (S-adenosyl methionine) is naturally produced by the body and found in every cell. It is known to be essential for scores of biochemical processes, from maintaining the structure of cell membranes to the manufacture of substances needed for transmitting nerve impulses and affecting emotions and moods.

NeurontinTM Helps My Spasms

My FM began 23 years ago when a man ran into me. After that the pain began and has worsened over the years. I am now using NeurontinTM [gabapentin] and get pretty good muscle relaxation with it so I don't have spasms all the time as I did previously. – Laura

Note: See Dr. Mark Pellegrino’s article in this issue - “Prescribed Medications for Fibromyalgia” - for an overview of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed “off-label” for Fibromyalgia symptoms based on emerging research findings, and the need to “experiment with your doctor to determine which medicines can help ‘control’ your symptoms.”
