Have questions about FM & ME/CFS symptoms, treatments, new studies? You'll be able to ask the expert - Lucinda Bateman, MD - TODAY, September 14, from 3-4 pm Pacific Time (6-7 pm Eastern) in the ImmuneSupport.com chat room. Not a registered user? Registration takes only a moment and you can do it now. Or you can log in as a guest just for this event, starting at 2:50 pm PST (5:50 EST).

Dr. Bateman is a busy hands-on ME/CFS and FM doctor who has seen more than 1,000 patients in her specialty since 1991. A doctor of internal medicine trained at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Bateman founded the Salt Lake City-based Fatigue Consultation Clinic in 2000, after nine years in private practice where she became a magnet for other doctors' ME/CFS and FM patient referrals.

Dr. Bateman has gained worldwide recognition for her dedication to the thorough, methodical evaluation of ME/CFS and FM patients. Her clinic's work-ups include extensive notes and charts for use by patients' primary care physicians and specialists to help educate them about these diseases. The goal, she says, is "to move patients to a better level of function" through the kind of cross-disciplinary evaluation and treatment "that is too often difficult to provide in today's primary care setting."

In Dr. Bateman's words, "When you say to people, 'I believe you, I will help you manage your symptoms, I will advocate for you,' that hope and feeling of control over their disease...is an important part of delivering medical care."

A Tireless Contributor to Patient and Physician Knowledge

Beyond her own clinical practice and research, Dr. Bateman believes it's her job to interest academic institutions and healthcare providers in ME/CFS/FM research & treatment by bringing sound scientific information to their attention. So her name appears faithfully on the presenter lists of key scientific and educational seminars, coast to coast. She is:

n A member of the CFS Name Change Advisory Board - eight world-class professionals dedicated to establishing a more respectable name for 'chronic fatigue syndrome' in the United States.

n Executive director of the Utah-based Organization for Fatigue and Fibromyalgia Education and Research (OFFER) - a nonprofit that sponsors events communicating best practices and new research for patients & professionals.

n A board member of the CFIDS Association of America, and the International Association for CFS/ME (IACFS/ME) - the world's leading scientific organization of ME/CFS and FM professionals.

Examples of Dr. Bateman's Treatment Advice

Dr. Bateman says she’s found that the most effective treatment for ME/CFS and FM is a combination of medication to improve symptoms, helping patients retain physical conditioning when possible, and using psychological and psychiatric interventions to help patients adapt to living with chronic illness. See for example:

If you have windows media player, this article links to Dr. Bateman’s excellent step-by-step slide presentation on how she helps her own FM and ME/CFS patients get the most from their office visits. From the 2007 IACFS/ME patient conference.

n "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the Exercise Conundrum"
Dr. Bateman explains how primary care physicians can work with ME/CFS patients to improve their physical conditioning while avoiding post-exertion 'payback' given the individual’s particular level or type of illness.

n “Cause and Cure Pending: Treat the ‘Syndrome Subsets’ of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia”
Dr. Bateman describes how – lacking any ‘silver bullet’ for FM and ME/CFS - she tailors health management plans to reflect individual patients’ different needs – which she calls “symptom clusters.”
