Time & Place:

DePaul University, Chicago

Purpose:
“Chronic illness is a significant and growing issue for our society. The healthcare industry has experienced a shift in focus from acute illness to chronic illness, and educators are finding that traditional disability supports are not sufficient to assist people with chronic conditions that often have waxing and waning symptoms. Physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, educators, advocates, disability specialists and other professionals all work with this group but rarely share perspectives and coordinate assistance. This interdisciplinary conference will engage professionals who work with students and help them to learn to recognize and serve this population. Additionally, there will be sessions dedicated to students with chronic illness who are currently attending or aspiring to attend college. The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for educators, clinicians and patient communities to share knowledge about educational and health services for individuals with chronic illness. Proposals addressing this year’s theme are welcomed.

Specific Goals:

n Connect clinical and community services to higher education institutions

n Educate medical and counseling professionals regarding the impact of college life on their patients/clients

n Improve the skills of faculty and staff who interact with college students with chronic illness n Empower students with chronic illness

n Utilize family and social networks as support systems for students with chronic illness

n Understand the experience of students with chronic illness (subjectively or objectively)

n Advocate for persons with chronic illness

n Uncover options for students with chronic illness post-graduation
