If You're a Caregiver or Need Support - Start Here to Locate Resources

Caregiver ResourcesNo matter where you live, if you are a caregiver for an ailing or aging family member (or want to find supportive services, care, or special living arrangements for yourself) a new website - Caring.com - can help you find out what’s available in your area, fast.

Caring.com also provides a great deal of useful information – articles, tips, insights, and advice - to help you really understand your alternatives, create a to-do list, ask the right questions, make informed choices, and share what others have learned about every facet of caring services.

It would appear that, as one site user commented, “It has almost every question I ever needed to ask when my father was sick, and now my mother is sick so I intend to use it quite a lot.”

Searchable Local Directory
Created “by caregivers for caregivers,” Caring.com features an enormous resource-locator database (for the U.S.) that you can search to find information on resources in your area. (More than 30,000 assisted living facilities and 15,000 nursing homes are listed, for example.)

To locate options such as senior housing, in-home care, adult day services, independent caregivers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and much more, pick your category and enter your location (county, city, or zip code).

If you search for Home Health Aides (Agencies), for example, you’ll find a list of agencies in your area – each with address, phone number, and a locator map – plus a general introduction with useful information about Home Health Aide services, explaining:
• The types of services they provide,
• Typical cost range & variables,
• What they’re best for,
• Questions to ask providers when you contact them,
• How to hire a Home Health Aide,
• And what your responsibilities would be if you decided to engage this type of service.

Our own search on the category “Independent Caregivers” turned up the names of 46 individuals in our community – with certifications, and some with quotes explaining their special interests. Again, we also found introductory information outlining what Independent Caregivers do, cost ranges depending on duties, what they’re best for, how to go about hiring an in-home caregiver, 15 questions to ask, and how to keep the person cared for safe from fraud.

Searchable Topic Areas
Each section of the site offers apparently high-quality articles and other resources. Areas include:
• Health
• Housing
• Finances and insurance
• Legal
• Life
• Daily care
• Community

Or Choose from a List of Common Concerns
These range from Alzheimer's/Dementia, Parkinson's, Stroke, Vision, Heart, Sleep, and Depression to Alcohol Dependency, Paying for Care, Driving/Transportation, and Topics A to Z.

Note: The executives of Caring.com state that though their site does support itself by including ads, they do not sell products, and strictly separate content from advertising.
