Indiana University Recruiting for Small Fibromyalgia Study - How Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Affects Brain Processing of Pain Stimuli

The IU Fibromyalgia Clinical Research Center is recruiting 30 FM patients for a study led by Dr. Dennis Ang (http://www.fibrofit.net/nfr) to:

“Better understand the contribution of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) in the experience of pain for patients with fibromyalgia. Specifically, the study would like to know how the brain processes painful stimuli over time. Additionally, this study hopes to identify how changes in one’s symptoms may affect markers or proteins in the blood.

“The study will enroll 30 participants and randomly assign them to either one of the two groups: a) educational instruction group or b) usual care group. Participants in the educational instruction group will receive 6 telephone calls.

“Although participants in the usual care group will receive no telephone calls, every participant will undergo evaluation at week 1, week 6 and week 12 of the study timeline. The evaluation will include an EMG (electromyogram) testing.

The researchers describe themselves as “a team of clinical investigators from Indiana University who are actively involved in research studies to further understand the cause of fibromyalgia symptoms and to develop effective treatments. We are composed of MDs and PhDs from varied field including rheumatology, nursing, psychology and exercise physiology.”
