WPI responds to proposed revisions in American Psychiatric Association manual potentially affecting ME/CFS patients

Whittemore Peterson Institute (www.wpinstitute.org) has posted its response to “very concerning language” in the American Psychiatric Association’s newly posted “Proposed Draft Revisions” to the Somatoform Disorders section of its upcoming revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5), due to be published in May 2013.

The WPI Response to Members of the DSM-5 Task Force is posted on the main WPI website at www.wpinstitute.org/news/docs/DSM-5WPIaw2.pdf.

By way of background:
Roughly speaking, somatoform disorders involve physical symptoms that do not result from underlying physical disease but are the consequence of abnormal illness beliefs.

It has been rumored that the descriptions and diagnostic criteria for certain of these disorders might be couched with so little specificity that they might be misapplied by physicians who don’t believe ME/CFS is an organic disorder: That they might pose a potential threat to people with a diagnosis of ME/CFS.

You will find the American Psychiatric Association’s proposed revisions relating to Somatoform Disorders at http://www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevisions/Pages/SomatoformDisorders.aspx

It’s confusing for a lay reader, but the WPI experts’ concerns and response to this document can put it in context..
