FDA Blood Safety Panel Recommends Ban on CFS Patient Blood Donation as Precaution Against Retrovirus Contamination!

The FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee, which met in Washington Dec 14-15 to discuss issues relating to the safety of the US blood supply, voted 9 to 4 on Tues, Dec 14, to recommend that the FDA ask potential blood donors if they have a medical history of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (known internationally as ME/CFS) - and if so, to bar them from donating blood. The final FDA decision will cover all blood centers in the US.

The decision quickly garnered headlines, including a Dec 15 Wall Street Journal article by ME/CFS reporter Amy Docker Marcus. See "Advisory Panel Says Victims of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Be Barred from Donating." Another high profile article was published on business/financial blog Bloomberg.com. See "Chronic Fatigue [Syndrome] Patients Should Be Barred From Giving Blood, Panel Says."

Advocates, be sure to read the comments and add your own, as reader interest and appreciation drives editorial interest. Whatever the role of XMRV and related retroviruses in ME/CFS, grassroots efforts and dedicated virologists are finally accelerating the pace of true research to find the cause and effective treatments.
