Is there an association between mastalgia [breast pain] and fibromyalgia? – Source: Breast (Edinburgh), Feb 21, 2011

  [ Not Yet Rated ]   [ 1 Comment ]
By Volkan Genc, et al. • www.ProHealth.com • February 25, 2011

To determine the prevalence of mastalgia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodynia [aka mastodynia, is a breast pain 'syndrome'] in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) and the prevalence of FM in patients with mastalgia in order to investigate coexistence, and to compare the pain patterns in the case of mastalgia or FM alone versus the two in combination.

Fifty consecutive patients with mastalgia and 50 consecutive patients with FM were assessed and examined both for the existence and severity of mastalgia and FM.

• A high proportion of patients with mastalgia (36%) fulfilled the criteria for FM,

• And 42% had mastalgia in the FM group.

Two distinctive entities, mastalgia and FM, being both unexplained pain syndromes, seem to frequently coexist.

Patients with mastalgia or FM should be thoroughly questioned considering each of the diseases so that in case of coexistence an appropriate therapy might be implemented for a successful pain management.

case definition

I wonder which case definition is being used for fibromyalgia. Or should we not bother to use a case definition? Fibromyalgia occurs in so many illnesses it can hardly be called an illness. There is always an underlying illness or pathology and fibromyalgia ie widespead pain is in itself a symptom. When fibromyalgia "syndrome" with its multitude of symptoms such as fatigue, ibs, post exertional malaise, vertigo, night sweats, tremors and cramps occurs it is usually ME/CFS.
