www.ProHealth.com • May 25, 2011

As you prepare for summer and that Memorial Day picnic – you may want to avoid buying or applying sunscreen until you check its safety rating in the Environmental Working Group product toxicity database.

The Environment Working Group’s Sunscreens 2011 website offers:

•  “Sunscreens Exposed”  – disturbing facts about sunscreens and their use, including the FDA’s continuing failure to establish any sunscreen safety standards (going on its 35th year).

•  A list of best sunscreens - 129 products selected from the EWG’s 1,700-product sunscreen database owing to low their low hazard ratings. See Sunscreen Guide, below.

•  The EWG's Giant Sunscreen Safety Database – to check out products before you buy or use them (rates 1,700 products with SPF, including lip balms, moisturizers, and makeups as well as sunscreen). The hazard ratings are green (low), yellow (moderate), and high (red). The sunscreen we were using turned out to be high.

•  Quick sun safety tips - (which ingredients, strengths, and forms to look for, and which to avoid).
