Why protesting DSM 5 revision is crucial (new deadline July 18)

The deadline for comments on the American Psychiatric Association’s proposed diagnostic criteria for Complex Somatic Symptoms Disorder is fast approaching (extended to midnight Monday, July 18).

If you had any doubt that the proposed revisions will encourage more US physicians to misdiagnose ME/CFS and fibromyalgia as psychiatric disorders – at least one recent journal article suggests the criteria are already being used.

This one was published in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry - http://article.psychiatrist.com/dao_1-login.asp?ID=10007457&RSID=60037244949174

• The study is described as a systematic review of trials for homeopathic treatment of “psychiatric conditions” including chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

• Further, the article refers to CFS & FM as Functional Somatic Syndrome disorders – i.e., if you express great concern that your “medically unexplained” (hard to test for) physical symptoms are serious, this would reflect a psychiatric condition marked by “cognitive distortion,” “catastrophizing,” “sickness thinking,” etc.

For the steps required to submit your own comment on the relevant DSM 5 revision, see the Co-Cure Listserv post at  https://listserv.nodak.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind1107b&L=co-cure&T=0&P=1924
