THE TOPIC: Each Thursday, Science Magazine runs an hour-long live chat on a ‘hot topic in science.’ This week the topic was a suite of articles that Sciencemag.org published the same day (Sep 22) on the findings of the 9-lab, NIH-funded Blood XMRV Scientific Research Working Group. Essentially they reported no evidence of XMRV infection in chronic fatigue syndrome and healthy donor blood samples, but Working Group head Ian Lipkin ("The Virus Hunter") has stated that as planned they will continue their blinded analyses of CFS & healthy samples to look for related and other viruses.

THE CHAT HOSTS:
This Science NOW chat was hosted by transfusion medicine researcher Michael P Busch, MD, PhD (a member of the Blood XMRV Scientific Research Working Group), and retrovirologist Jay A Levy, MD (HIV/AIDS researcher at UC San Francisco, who recently reported his own failure to find evidence of XMRV in CFS patients).  Together they fielded many interesting questions.
