Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFIDS) Researcher Receives $2 Million Federal Grant

By Source: David Patterson • www.ProHealth.com • May 1, 1995

Dr. Leonard Jason, a 1993 CFIDS Association Research Grant recipient, received a very high priority score on his $2 million CFIDS grant application, Estimating Rates of CFS in a Community Sample, submitted to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), the lead institute for CFIDS research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal of Dr. Jason's prevalence study is to determine the rate of CFIDS in Chicago, a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse city, by randomly sampling 26,000 adults and performing medical examinations on individuals reporting CFIDS-like symptoms.

Dr. Jason, a DePaul University psychologist, received a $22,000 CFIDS Research Grant from the Association in 1993 to conduct a smaller community based prevalence study in Chicago. The data generated from this Association-funded study enabled Dr. Jason to provide NIAID with convincing data that contributed to his high priority score. The generous contributions by Association and the CFIDS Health Buyers Club members appear to have turned a $22,000 investment into a $2 million federal grant.
