According to a press release issued July 5, Lupin Pharmaceuticals has received FDA approval to market a generic form of the prescription drug Lyrica® (Pregabalin Capsules). Lupin Pharmaceuticals, based in Baltimore, is the 5th largest generic drug marketer in the US, and is a subsidiary of Mumbai-based Lupin Ltd.

The capsules, available in 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 225 and 300mg, “are the AB-rated* generic equivalent of Lyrica® capsules, indicated for neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, post herpetic neuralgia, adjunctive therapy for adult patients with partial onset seizures and fibromyalgia.”

Stay tuned for information on when where and how (and at what price, of course) this pharmaceutical product will be made available in the US and elsewhere. (Lyrica® sales reached $1.8 billion in the US alone for the 12 months ending March 2012. and $3.4 billion worldwide in 2011.)

* According to the FDA, “AB-rated drugs are drugs that meet the necessary bioequivalence standards established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A generic drug is considered bioequivalent to a brand-name drug if it contains the same active pharmaceutical ingredient as the branded drug, and if there is no significant difference in the formulation, quality, and effectiveness of the two drugs.”

Generic Lyrica

I teach a class (non-medical) in fatigue disorders once a month. I teach people about nutrition, exercise, massage therapy, working with their physicians, research, etc. Eight of my nine students who used Lyrica upon the advice of their physicians eventually had severe problems with the Lyrica, all saying it was the "drug from Hell". They had some relief for a few weeks or months, but it was downhill from there. I always pass on information about personal experiences from the perhaps 200 students I have had over the years, and I pass this information that is "right from the horse's mouth" to all of my students who ask about it. The one student who was still taking it was also beginning to have problems, but just little ones at that time. That amounts to 100% of those taking the drug who have spoken with or emailed me about their problems with the drug. I never recommend it, not unless they take it for no more than 1 or 2 weeks at a time. And even that small amount can cause problems. I do, however, recommend massage therapy whenever it is financially feasible. Locally, my students and I have available to us a Chinese medical college clinic and a massage therapy school clinic, both with excellent massage therapy available for only $35.00 for 1 1/2-hour treatments or even longer. I also recommend deep-water aerobics, again when available and only if the water is between 83 and 87 degrees F. Cooler is painful, and hotter weakens the muscles, although the hotter water can be quite pleasant in a spa with properly placed back and neck jets.

Massage and dietary measures and excercise are no way any help for Fibromyalgia and Neuropathy. So don't waste your time. Lyrica was the only thing I tried that relieves my issues.
