Abstract:

Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture and compare it with fluoxetine [brand name Prozac] in treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

Methods: We conducted a prospective, randomized clinical trial. Fifteen patients were treated with acupuncture and compared with a control group (n=15) of patients who received fluoxetine. Visual analogue scale, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and determined number of tender points were used as outcome measurements.

Results: After four weeks, the acupuncture group was significantly better than the control group in the number of tender points. Total fibromyalgia symptoms were significantly improved in the acupuncture group compared with the control group during the study period (P= 0.01).

The largest difference in mean FIQ total scores was observed at 4 weeks (42.2 VS. 34.8 in the control and acupuncture groups, respectively; P= 0.007). At the end of one year of the follow up, patients who received acupuncture were significantly better than the control group in all measures. Fatigue and anxiety were the most significantly improved symptoms during the follow up period.

Discussion: Acupuncture significantly improved pain and symptoms of fibromyalgia. Also, we found that acupuncture did not have any side effect and was tolerable.

an antidepressant not working that well for FM - this is a better study but still something most already know - how about you clowns do some serious research like trying to detect the pathology better so this devestating disease can be better treated as right now treatment is deplorable

better study as well as one can now try accupuncture to alleviate some symptoms with much less side effects than antidepressants. only problem is accupuncture costs an arm and a leg if used long term where is ADs are covered by insurance - well of course - we have to line the pockets of big pharma and not accupuncturists - so sad

4 weeks comparison meaningless

"Results: After four weeks, the acupuncture group was significantly better than the control group in the number of tender points." Well, fluoxetine has the longest half-life of all antidepressants, it can be several weeks. And even antidepressants with a half-life of less than 24 hours usually take weeks to kick in. You wouldn't expect fluoxetine to offer much beyond a placebo effect at four weeks. I have a friend with CFS/ME who benefited quite a bit from fluoxetine - but it took 2-3 months for it to start working.

flouxetine

Flouxetine never was all that useful for FM. A better test would have been to compare acupunture to duloxetine or milnacipran. Trouble with acupuncture is that it is very expensive to receive regular treatment. Pills are usually relatively cheaper if they help.
