To protect your memory, take this advice from Jeff Victoroff, M.D., author of Saving Your Brain (Bantam).

-Get active. "You don't have to be a triathlete or run 20 miles a week - just walking briskly for half an hour four or five times weekly will help make your oxygen-burning more efficient and increase your chances of delivering a good blood supply to every neuron in your brain," Victoroff says.

-Take your vitamins. Large-scale studies show that those who take vitamin E supplements have better thinking abilities, stronger memories, and a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease than those who don't take the supplements. Victoroff recommends getting 400 international units of the antioxidant (in non-synthetic form) every day.

-Follow your heart. Learning new skills that you love - from painting to piano playing - can give your brain a great workout. "It's that passionate new learning that's likely to make new synapses grow in your nervous system, which exactly counters the effects of aging," Victoroff says.
