With obesity now one of the most preventable causes of death in the U.S., new research shows that our standards for what's considered a healthy body-mass index (BMI) might need to change. In a recent University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill study, scientists found that keeping BMI [(weight in pounds divided by height in inches divided by height in inches)times 703] below 22 could prevent 46 percent of diabetes cases. How to lower your BMI? Weight loss specialist Douglas Markham, M.D., recommends alternating family fitness activities like hiking, bicycling, and swimming each weekend. With his new public education campaign, Health Across America, Markham is currently touring the country's 25 "fattest cities" (as ranked by Men's Fitness magazine) and lecturing on his mind-body-spirit approach to weight loss.
