If you use a spa or hot tub to help soothe your arthritis symptoms, there are some important safety measures you should consider to help make sure you get the most out of your soak. The Arthritis Foundation recommends the following safety tips:

* Consider that you may need help getting in and out of your spa or hot tub. Make sure someone strong enough is available to help, if necessary.

*Keep an eye on the thermometer. The water temperature in your spa or hot tub should feel soothing and comfortable, not hot. For most people, soaking time should not exceed 10 to 15 minutes at temperatures between 98º and 104º F. Start slowly until you find the temperature and duration that's right for you.

* Get out immediately if you feel lightheaded or nauseated.

* If joint swelling, stiffness or pain increase, discontinue the use of heat and exercise and consult your doctor.

* Never use a hot tub or spa during or after drinking alcohol or using drugs, which may cause sleepiness, drowsiness or changes in blood pressure.
