How important is drinking water to your health? In the August 2000 issue of Health & Healing - Tomorrow's Medicine Today, the cover story was entitled "Drink More Water!" Whitaker reviewed a number of reports in prestigious medical journals, as well as reports from his readers. All of them said that drinking more water improved the health of people with many disorders, including asthma, cancer, constipation, heart disease, stroke and kidney stones. In discussing the importance of water, Whitaker said:

"Think about it. Water makes up 70% of magnificently engineered bodies and while we can survive for months without food, we could last only days without water."

Whitaker referred to a book by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D., Your Body's Many Cries for Water. Dr. Batmanghelidj proposed that dehydration is an underlying cause of most of the diseases afflicting mankind. According to this physician, among the conditions increased water intake helps included neck and back pain. Here are some of Whitaker's "Recommendations for Water":

-Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water every day. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink - you'll likely never get this much down. Instead, keep filled water bottles at your desk, in your car, by your bed and by your favorite chair as a reminder.

-If you have congestive heart failure or kidney disease, or if you're taking diuretics, talk to your doctor before increasing your water intake.
