Concerns About Confidentiality in Genetic Testing for Alzheimer’s Disease

[ Not Yet Rated ]   [ Discuss This Article ]
By Report by the AD Educ and Referral Ctr • www.ProHealth.com • March 21, 1996

ApoE information gathered for research purposes generally can be protected by confidentiality laws. On the other hand, information obtained in apoE testing may not be protected by confidentiality statutes once it is put in a person's medical records. Thereafter, employers, insurance companies, and other health care organizations could gain access to this information; and discrimination could result. For example, employment opportunities or insurance premium rates could be affected. Little is known about how the stigma associated with an increased risk for AD may affect people's family and social lives.
