Fibromyalgia Life Lessons - What You Need to Know.
By Necie Edwards

Pain doesn’t just show up in your life for no reason. It’s a sign that something in your life needs to change. I had a lot of warning signs and can still hear the sirens ringing in my ears when I remember the “perfect storm” that led to my being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

I was working in the pharmaceutical industry where I was bullied for 2½ years. The office environment was toxic and not a great environment in which to work. My chronic pain started out as severe chest pain, wide-spread body pain, IBS, sleep apnea, etc.  My wake-up call was when I was rushed to the ER from work twice in six months for severe chest pain. The ER doctor stated he had seen far too many patients from my place of employment and that next time I may have a heart attack. I still have some of the battle scars and want to share with you what I learned along the way. Shakti Gawain, best-selling author and internationally renowned teacher of consciousness, is someone who helped me face my scars.

According to Shatki, acceptance is the willingness to look at, confront, and understand something instead of pushing it away. When I first read this quote, it angered me a lot. You see, in the beginning I had not been willing to look at or confront the anger and resentment inside of me. Once I took the time to confront the “elephant” in the room, I learned a lot about myself.

Following are a few life lessons that have marinated within me for three years and tenderized my heart and emotions.
  • No job, regardless of the salary, benefits or seniority is more important than your health, emotional and spiritual well-being!  Go where you are celebrated and appreciated.

  • Allow yourself to grieve. Grieving is not just limited to the loss of a loved one. You need to allow yourself to grieve the life you used to live, relationships, friendships, and employment, etc.

  • Be gentle to yourself. When I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I blamed myself for allowing this to happen. I had to learn and respect that “life happens” with or without your consent.

  • Make “sweet tea” out of the lemons deposited in your life. :)

  • Don’t be married to your diagnosis. In other words, don’t allow your mindset to be committed to living with chronic pain and want it to continue.

  • Your emotions and thoughts have energy. Think about what you are manifesting within your life. Words have the power to build you up or destroy you.

  • What you focus on grows. The more I focused on those who bullied and mistreated me, the angrier I became. Changing my attitude changed and saved my life.

  • Never give up Hope!

  • I learned just how strong a woman I am. I was reintroduced to myself and discovered gifts that God had planted inside of me to prosper me in all areas of my life.

  • Always take care of yourself and place yourself on your To-Do List.
