BIG APPLE TAKES A BITE OUT OF LYME-- Heather Hearst Launches Project Lyme in NYC

With a special talk and book signing with Ally Hilfiger for her new book 'Bite Me' and conversation with world-renowned Lyme disease expert, Dr. Steven Phillips

NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Heather Hearst, founder of Project Lyme, was joined by top leaders, doctors and scientists from the Lyme community for their first event celebrating the launch of Project Lyme, held last week at the Hearst Tower in New York City. Many organizations focus on funding research, treatments, patient advocacy, and testing – but Project Lyme focuses solely on prevention and early diagnosis.

Ally Hilfiger, Dr. Steven Phillips, Heather Hearst, Project Lyme Event, Hearst Tower NY "I founded Project Lyme to create global awareness and educate the public about the vital importance of prevention and early detection of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Nearly 30 years ago today, I was fighting a silent battle with Lyme, now I'm taking action so more don't have to suffer."

Lyme Disease is one of the fastest growing epidemics in the U.S. with over 300,000 lives ruined annually, but it is still a silent epidemic. Project Lyme's aggressive start to win the race against ticks has a fast lead on their goal to get '1 Million People Talking About Ticks'.  The NGO's big data and big message approach to raising awareness through grassroots, social and top tier advertising has taken off at record pace in a few short months.

"We are extremely grateful to all those who made "An Evening with Project Lyme"such an amazing success—our sponsors, speakers, donors, and friends from the Lyme community all came together for our first event," said Heather Hearst, founder of Project Lyme. "We are all stronger when we work together and, together, we can put an end to this suffering and prevent this disease."

Ally Hilfiger, daughter of Tommy Hilfiger, and sufferer of Lyme disease, has chronicled her struggles in her new book, Bite Me. Ms. Hilfiger gave a special talk about her debilitating experience with Lyme and hosted a book signing. "Project Lyme will hopefully change the way we prepare and protect ourselves when going outside and bring awareness to the tick born disease. I admire Heather Hearst for her bold and pointed efforts in helping families learn about prevention," said Ally Hilfiger.

In addition, world-renowned Lyme disease expert, Dr. Steven Phillips, who has treated over 20,000 patients in the last two decades, spoke about the latest on Lyme disease, it's symptoms and what can be done to improve both prevention and early detection.

"Tonight we came together to talk about ticks. Our greatest defense against Lyme disease is to prevent it in the first place – we don't need to cure what we don't catch," added Heather Hearst. "The faster we get the word out, the more people we can save from years of illness."

Sponsors of the event include:  GIVE, Steven and Alexandra Cohen Foundation, Insect Shield, Global Lyme Alliance, founders Sherry and Laird Cagan of Stand4Lyme, Cota Innovation, Starfish Impact, PlowShare Group, Pesky's and Tick Ease.

ABOUT PROJECT LYME

Based in Rockport, Maine and founded by Heather Hearst, Project Lyme is a global 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and early diagnosis of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Project Lyme is spreading the word through omni-channel campaigns including advertising, social media and grassroots efforts to share prevention tips, tick and Lyme news, personal stories and videos of Lyme survivors, and educational tools and programs. For more information, go to projectlyme.org and view the campaign video here.

ABOUT LYME DISEASE

The CDC estimates over 300,000 new cases each year.  That is more than the number of hepatitis, HIV, colon cancer and breast cancer cases. Many experts believe that 300,000 number is low.  The number of Lyme cases reported annually has increased nearly 25-fold since national surveillance began in 1982. According to the CDC, 15-20 percent of individuals treated for Lyme continue to experience severe arthritis, persistent fatigue, impaired vision, memory loss and other cognitive problems.
