Q & A: Is ice cream a fatty food?

Q: In the world of the "fattiest foods", where does ice cream fall? - Joanne

A: That depends on the kind of ice cream. There are some ice creams with a whole lot of fat and some with much less. Not all ice creams are created equal. For example 1/2 cup of Haagen-Dazs Macadamia Nut has about 26 grams of fat, but 1/2 cup of an off brand of strawberry has approximately 6 grams of fat. The key is to look at the label to check out the amount of fat and saturated fat. Also, make sure you look at the portion size, the bigger your portion the more fat and calories you are taking in. Here are some tips if you are a real ice cream lover . . . .

1. Look for low fat ice cream. For example, my favorite ice cream is Rocky Road. I have found by experiment that Health Choice and Dreyers make an excellent low-fat version of Rocky Road. Try a few different brands to find some that you like.

2. Try sherbet or sorbets. These usually have no or very little fat in them. Make sure you watch your portion though, sherbets and sorbets still have calories.

3. This is a tip if you just cannot avoid eating ice cream. If you tend to overeat ice cream just because it is there, don't keep it in your house. When you feel like having ice cream, go to an ice cream or yogurt shop and get the smallest portion. Then you are satisfying your craving, but not overindulging.

4. Lastly, remember portion size! Get your measuring cup out and find out what a portion is. Follow what the label tells you. Obesity is becoming such an epidemic because our society eats too much.
