Everyone could use a memory boost. There are a number of techniques to increase and retain your memory and keep your mind alert. A variety of options ranging from supplements to mindful workouts abound.

Gingko biloba is a well-known antioxidant that boosts mental clarity by increasing the oxygen supply to the brain. DMAE helps promote the formation of acetylcholine, a vital neurotransmitter. Phosphatidyl Choline, a component of lecithin, improves memory function and concentration. Adding a supplement to your diet is a healthful way to increase and retain your brain function.

Simple techniques to help your mind function smoothly:

? Continue to learn:
Give your brain the stimulation it desires; read the newspaper, go to the library, write letters. Challenge yourself by enrolling in an adult education course to learn about subjects that interest you or to pick up new skills. Do puzzles, play card games; any type of activity that requires thinking skills is beneficial.

? Keep your health in check:
Make an effort to relax and de-stress. Monitor your blood pressure, high blood pressure can trigger mini-strokes.

? Monitor your drug intake:
Regularly review the prescription and non-prescription medications you take with your physician. Discard any medications that have expired or drugs you no longer need. Some drugs can cause confusion and memory loss, be aware of the side effects. Pay attention to drug interaction precautions.

? Get adequate amounts of sleep:
Sleep is necessary for proper brain function. When we engage in REM or deep sleep our minds are stimulated by dreams. Sleep deprivation can result in a plethora of symptoms including confusion.

? Eat a nutritious diet:
Pay attention to your diet and include a variety of foods to ensure that you are not at risk for vitamin deficiencies. Certain vitamin deficiencies such as a B12 deficiency can lead to memory loss if left untreated.

? Engage in physical AND mental exercise:
Exercises that engage the mind and body are popular and easy to find nowadays. Options such as tai-chi, yoga, pilates, qi gong, and neuromuscular integrated action (NIA) are available in most cities or on video. Mindful workouts help to lower stress and blood pressure, improve sleep and rev up your immune system.
