More than 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and an additional 18 million have low bone mass. The amount of calcium you consume is important, but did you know protein may also play a role in bone mass? A study from the Mayo Clinic reports that a low-protein, low-calcium eating plan may increase the risk of bone – especially vertebral – fractures.

The study looked at bone density, bone turnover, diet and other factors in more than 300 women. Results showed that low bone density and an eating plan low in protein resulted in an increased risk of vertebral fractures. In addition, diets low in protein were associated with an increased occurrence of all osteoporosis-related fractures.

This study reinforces the fact that a well-balanced eating plan is essential to growth, health and maintenance of healthy tissues, cells and bones.
