Food labels will soon get more informative -- specifically, they'll give you more information about a very unhealthy type of fat. The Food and Drug Administration announced this week that it will require food manufacturers to list the amount of trans fats that their products contain, The Associated Press reports. Trans fats, found in a variety of foods, are fats that remain solid at room temperature.

Studies have suggested that trans fats may be as bad -- or worse -- for the heart as unhealthy saturated fats. They can raise levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol and lower levels of "good" HDL cholesterol. Previously, the only way for consumers to know whether their foods contained trans fats was to search the ingredients list for the word "hydrogenated." Food manufacturers have until 2006 to make the change to their labels, the AP says.
